My blog, Mono Log

Back on the 31st of January this year, I started a blog on how I learnt to create monochrome photos, as someone who previously thought that mono "sucks the life out of the image". I've just uploaded my 29th post, "What a coincidence!" on what I call 'juxtapositions of coincidence' and how you can increase your chances of capturing them. Earlier posts go into some detail about the learning process I went through, including the three principles I got through studying other people's photos on Flickr: encapsulation, orientation, and colour-toning.

For me mono draws attention to specific aspects of a photo. Almost like color is a distraction. With that said, some photos have to be in color.
Sometimes I wonder if there's something hardwired in our brain that makes mono appealing. Low light, night time with a moon. That's what we grew up with.

Yes, I'm learning that as I go along. It's not just tone, it's texture, and sometimes line and shape. Also, monochrome can reveal detail that's hidden in a colour version.

That makes sense. Our night vision is monochromatic.

Sorry for OP to deal with such odd POV as he have to do with this

I answered "color or b/w" question in past December interview, my answer was - black and white divides life and else in street photography. Not my idea, but what I have learned by portraits from Dorothea Lange, Diana Arbus, Jane Bown, Yousuf Karsh and Henri-Cartier Bresson. He not only did some street, but "Inner Silence" book of portraits.


BTW, in the mono link I went and observed, out of four photos you were close enough only once and it was good. Not just for mono, but with those who are alive.

I haven't studied any well-known photographers. I started from scratch, from viewing people's photos on Flickr. Of course, I've seen photos by Lange and Arbus, and a few by Cartier-Bresson, but I'm just a guy with a camera and few pretentions, checking out how things look in monochrome.

I highly recommend to learn photography via masters. Which is BW naturally. Not just photography, but about masters themselves. You will find a lot of answers. If you have questions.
