Old Burying Ground. Beaufort, NC.

Girl in Barrel of Rum — Here is the grave of a girl buried in a barrel of rum. In the 1700s an English family, including an infant daughter, came to Beaufort. The girl grew up with a desire to see her homeland, and finally persuaded her mother to allow her to make the voyage. Her father promised his wife he would return the girl safely. The girl enjoyed her visit to London, but died on the voyage home. She would have been buried at sea, but her father could not bear to break his promise. He purchased a barrel of rum from the captain, placed her body in it, and brought it to Beaufort for burial.

There was a barrel at this site for the longest time until some teens set it on fire... This is what remains. People still leave toys at her grave..

All the world's indeed a stage and we are merely players performers and portrayers.

A few years back before my wife passed we went to that very cemetery and saw the graves there. I took some black and white shots. Thank yo for the memory and the story about the little girl.

very cool - I posted some shots from there a couple of pages back, would love to visit again & spend a lot more time exploring with the camera.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

Burial Hill Cemetery (1622), Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Several Pilgrims were buried here and the first fort and meeting house were built here. The earliest grave markers were made of carved wood and no longer survive. Set high atop this hill, the Pilgrims placed their cannons facing the harbor for protection
