I saw the Natural History Museum photo competition results today in London and I would say that this is similar quality - you should enter it.

Thank you for your encouragement, davholla. :-D

Boy, I took a short trip up north for a few days and tons of great shots have been posted. I went up to the Klamath Basin staying a couple of nights in Klamath Falls Oregon, and was not disappointed. Counted over 50 eagles between Lower Klamath and Tule Lake NWR's the first afternoon I arrived. Hopefully I got some good flight shots, but am just starting to download now. This one is from New Year's Eve at the San Luis NWR near Los Banos California.

That's great that you had a successful trip to Klamath!

I, too, go to Klamath for bird photography. . But I'm not into raptors very much, so I go in late March, when the duck and goose numbers are at their annual peak. . It's a pretty good place to photograph ducks and geese in flight.

I would love to go back for that, as I also love to shoot water birds. Luckily there is a huge wintering population of ducks and geese right here in the Sacramento and Central Valley, so I can (and do) take day trips to the NWR's closer to home.

.You live in the Sacremento Valley ..... lucky you!

A good friend of mine lives down there in the Sacramento Valley, and considers the area to offer world-class opportunities for several species of ducks and geese in flight, including Pintails and Ross's Geese. . He himself is a world-class waterfowl photographer, so I put a lot of faith into what he says about shooting waterfowl in that area. . Feel free to send me a PM if you would like to know who he is; perhaps you know him.

I keep trying to work it out so that I can get down there at the best time for those species, but it is a difficult time to get away. . Hopefully this coming December or early next January will finally provide me with an opportunity to get down there for a few days.

Have you ever been so fortunate as to photograph a blue phase Ross's Goose down there where you live?

Well I live in the Bay Area, but close enough to get there on almost every weekend during fall and winter. The best time for Sac or Colusa NWR's is in December in my opinion so it would be well worth a visit that time of year. Tens of thousands of Snow/Ross geese. Pintails are also very common. I have seen but not shot a blue Ross. This was Sac NWR on Jan 4.
