So many views, some will join and se the images posted are superior to their own & therefore go no further.. Some new members may feel there is a Clique" 2 or 3 other Forums I used to visit had that issue.. Here some real tekky photographers make comments that can be hurtful! example:- I Post an image, just to share my enthusiasm, comments can include:- wrong Aperture, poor focussing, wrong ISO, etc..etc.. A new member might just walk away! Not everyone has unlimited expendable $$'s.. Personally I don't think showing All ones equipment is overly beneficial, one other point, IMHO there are too many Sub Sections.. In the end - It's the Image that really matters .....L

I think some individuals join only to read and learn. I have friends that frequent other forums that do not post.

I often browse other forums (FM, photo.net etc ) in guest mode and have never posted. I am active here on POTN but probably wouldn’t feel comfortable enough to post there. I guess the same may apply to some inactive memoin this forum.

I see your point. I feel that criticism of any endeavor should only be provided at the artist's request. I find POTN to be mostly that way; if you are asking to be critiqued, post in an appropriate section. Unsolicited criticism is quite boorish.

My father in law is FAMOUS for unsolicited criticism. The last time I cooked a meal for him, he offered several ways I could have done better. This, from a man who can't microwave a hotdog. When he finished his 'suggestions', I simply said, "You are welcome." He looked at me quizzically for a few seconds, then said, "What?". I replied, "Oh, sorry. I thought you said 'Thank you'." He didn't get it. I haven't cooked for him since.

My step daughters FIL is as one might say a Knowitall. We went out on a photography day some time ago, funnily enough he didn't bring a camera! so I lent him our family Nikon 3100 - anyways half way thro the day he says, I would love to have used a Nikon D90 to show off my skills.. I took him to my car and opened the trunk, picked up my D90 and handed it to him, the surprise look on his face was worth a million dollars. As expected he had no idea of how to use the camera and spent the afternoon just looking thro the v/finder and mumbling.. Back to the Forum, a nice place...

Well, there are others who complain about a lack of C&C. Good feedback makes you a better photographer.

That seems odd. Why bother to join, if you haven't checked it out, spent some time, and developed an interest? Is it possibly that some folks would rather shoot than type? :) I have time for both; retired now and only working 3 days a week.

If you don't join and login, the pictures hosted by the forum are only shown as thumbnails. You have have to login to see them full-size.

Yes, good feedback does. . But sometimes there is feedback that is not good.

Good feedback explains what could have been done to make the image better. . Useless feedback just points out a flaw without giving explanations as to how the flaw can be avoided in future attempts.

For example, if someone posts a photo and someone sees it and says "not interesting at all", that is useless feedback that will not help the photographer. . If someone takes the time to explain several different ways that the photographer could have made the image more interesting, then that is helpful and worthwhile.

Good feedback involves teaching, not just pointing out a deficiency and leaving it at that. . If someone is not willing or able to take the time to articulate useful, detailed suggestions, then they should keep their negative thoughts to themselves.

.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

I came on here to learn. Then I stayed for the banter and chances to grow in my interests and technique. I get inspiration and have a place to share, which in turn keeps me shooting. I've even gone hiking just so I could have hiking pics to post :)

Methinks "whoops" doesn't fully understand the GDPR.

3 Rectification and erasure
A right to be forgotten was replaced by a more limited right of erasure in the version of the GDPR that was adopted by the European Parliament in March 2014.[17][18] Article 17 provides that the data subject has the right to request erasure of personal data related to them on any one of a number of grounds within 30 days, including noncompliance with Article 6(1) (lawfulness) that includes a case (f) if the legitimate interests of the controller are overridden by the interests or fundamental rights and freedoms of the data subject, which require protection of personal data (see also Google Spain SL, Google Inc. v Agencia Española de Protección de Datos, Mario Costeja González).

There has to be some condition or grounds for misuse of data, from what I can tell. Also, what personal info does POTN really have of any of us other than the info we offer up willingly on posts we make or the limited info when we register.

As to the rest of the discussions, I guess I am not following. Yes there are many that registered that don't participate and just read posts, or have completely walked away from POTN. Sometimes this hobby may feel more like a job, and people quit it, or they get rid of gear, or they have life just happen to them. I can completely see that as a valid reason why one wouldn't frequent POTN any longer.

I used to own a corvette and was active on one of the large corvette forums. I got rid of the car after a few years, I engaged with the forum for a small amount of time after, and haven't been back in years.

I was like that on my espresso forum. Once I decided on a machine and grinder my following dropped off to maybe only if I want to see the newest thing.

I have a few forums like that I joined as well as a condition to post any question.

Life can be very busy for many of us. Have kids in school and sports events, church involvement, online business coupled with a 9-5 (or really a 7-5) career, and you find there is little time to be on a forum. ;)
