I don't use it often, but the CV21/3.5E doesn't disappoint .....

One from London, at the Olympic Park.
On the screen I use for editing the crane are bright red, but on here they are not, hows this look?

Gorgeous Lee!

Thanks David. The colours & contrast really pop from this - Needs a bit of work to match CV21 & CV40 images.... ;)

Oh, I also spur of the moment bought a new tripod last week - Turned up today!!

After reviewing some recent images shot with my FE 100-400GM on a tripod, I am a bit disappointed in the results. Most were not tack sharp. What are your recommendations for shooting a long lens on a tripod like the 100-400 GM? Do you use EFCS? Should I leave Optical Steady Shot on the lens while on the tripod? I used a remote trigger with a 5 second delay. Most of the shutter speeds were below 1/20 sec. Thanks.

Most of the shutter speeds were below 1/20 sec.

There are more owners of this lens that can give you better advice than me Alfredo, but I think slow shutter speed could be your culprit. Even on a tripod with 5-axis stabilization, the slightest breeze can be enough to introduce a small amount of camera shake, especially at 400mm. At that slow a shutter speed, I think it would be difficult to get a shot that isn't blurred a little.

EFCS or even silent mode if you bracket. Physically block wind if any. If no stray light, remove the hood. Lower your tripod, it's uncomfortable, but it could be that it cant handle the weight as well. Turn off stabilization. Double check your footing is very stable.

The slow shutter under 1/20th would be my guess,
especially if you're shooting at the longer end of the zoom range.
1/20th is really pushing it for tack sharp results.

Beautiful Travis. I could immediately tell the leaf was placed there, but it’s still a nice addition regardless. Some focus stacking would have helped the foreground rock be in focus. Wonderful work!

Thanks David. The image is a focus stack, the rock and leaf were one image focused on the leaf. I suspect any lack of sharpness you are seeing is the result of reducing the image down to 900 pixels tall.

Thanks guys for the tips. I will try shooting without the hood on and use EFCS. I was shooting around sunset hence the slower shutter speed. I will work to keep the speed up to 1/60s or 1/80s.

Note: I went back and updated my last image of the red rocks. I'm liking this more muted version better. Thanks.

"Jagged Cliff's Edge"

My eye was drawn to these icicles forming on the edge of this rock. The red and earthy warm tones of the background rocks I thought would provide a nice contrast against the cooler tones and sharp form of the icicles.

Nice series. There are several areas of birding to be found in the California deserts. This spring, I need to make the effort to visit a couple of them at least.

Here's a summary of ten of them.

That's a great link. I'd like to visit them all. One image has a Violet Green Swallow, get one of these Gene!
