Feb 11, 2020 13:32 | #1518 First trip to an airshow with the 90D and Canon 100-400L MKII. This was a smaller local show that pretty much ran all propeller driven planes which always makes things a bit more difficult as you need to keep the shutter speed low to keep some of the prop-blur. Overall, the camera did really well! I'm really looking forward to the bigger military shows coming up next month! Flickr stream: https://flic.kr/ps/se6hB

Feb 17, 2020 20:52 | #1521 Best Hummer Yet. Set my Acc/Dec to + 1/2 and I'm not sure if this is the result.. The birds I like to shoot are twichers (bufflehead taking off, hummers, flickers, etc)... and the light was superb!! "His thoughts tumbled in his head, making and breaking alliances

Feb 18, 2020 00:23 | #1523 Took the 90D out to the zoo this morning. Overall I got some good shots, but that mandrill was the best of the day for me Flickr stream: https://flic.kr/ps/se6hB

But this shot was OK. Could it have been the glare reflections in the water? and then the patterning on the neck? What I love about BBF is I can use my manual focus override on the 100-400 for tricky situations. Did you try that? Great shot BTW! "His thoughts tumbled in his head, making and breaking alliances

I don't have the OOF shots in front of me right now (and they might have been deleted) but IIRC, these looked OK when I was shooting but not afterwards on the computer. When this happens I scrutinize the shots to see why the focus might have been off. Usually the cause is not obvious. Canon R5, Canon 90D, assorted Canon lenses, Sony RX10 IV

I found out that I was inadvertantly changing settings or hitting the AE lock. I disabled the AE lock button the "*" so now it doesn't matter if I press it by mistake. "His thoughts tumbled in his head, making and breaking alliances

What I love about BBF is I can use my manual focus override on the 100-400 for tricky situations. Did you try that? Great shot BTW! I have always had focus issues with birds on sunlit water. This is with, over the years, a 30D, 40D, 7D and 7DII, with Canon and third-party lenses. The glare just seems to present a problem. Not all shots will be off, but these cameras have all had about the same degree of difficulty with these subjects. I have decided to see if live view focusing handles this better. I didn't try MF because I was not aware the AF was off ... plus my manual focus efforts are usually not as good as AF. OK, I found the badly OOF photos in a backup archive. The AF went to the background in most of these, probably because the bird was moving and the head was on and off the AF point. So that would not be the 90D's fault. Here is a full frame example.
