Yep, Chalkhill male it is, Jack. Nice shot of an increasingly scarce butterfly.

Sunny and 60 yesterday. Two Monarchs showed up on my wife's Lantana patch. I think this is a young one, the other was quite weather beaten.
Nice to see them after our cold spell. Taken at MFD (10') and slightly cropped from my 90d.

I cropped this female Monarch as tightly as possible, to show the business end of her proboscis. Sharp as a needle and seldom seen, by me. She seemed to be holding the Lantana blossom open with her front leg, prior to feeding. Super nice to see these butterflies in my yard, in January. Taken at MFD (10'), with my 90d and cropped about 50%.

OK! Time to bump the butterfly thread back to the top. It is mariposas monarcas season down in Mexico and while i haven't seen the numbers for this year I have a feeling it will be about the same as last year...which is good. Just finished first week. two more to go.

Learn something every day. Thanks. We grew up with them as 'moths'.
Curious, how you know it's a female?
