Ian Millar, former lead product designer/creative director at f-stop Gear left f-stop last year and has founded a new company Shimoda Designs (external link). I first learned about his company from FM and they have some interesting ideas in these new bags. They also have a kickstarter (external link) that I've participated in that ends in a couple of weeks. Ian is a great guy and I hope his company does well which it might as the kickstarter has currently tripled the original goal. As of today there's two weeks left in the kickstarter. I just found out about this bag yesterday when I was searching for an insert for a regular backpacking bag I just bought. I had just bought the backpack insert Tenba makes when I found the link to the Shimoda. It looks like a great bag but I just bought a Gregory Targhee and the insert and can't return it really because I can't tolerate another day carrying my gear in the Lowepro 250. I'd have to wait till February and return the items I just bought :(. Oh well....

The kickstarter ended a couple of weeks ago and was successful - Shimoda raised 6 times the amount of their goal. Ian announced an add-on program for backers: you could buy any of the initial product offers in addition to products you bought when you made your pledge at the same 30% discount. This was very helpful as some products were only offered in kits in the kickstarter offering, and the add-on meant you could get the piece you wanted by itself. Shipping is free for backers.

Ian is very happy with the response and it looks like Shimoda Designs is going to be viable. So now there is a choice at the top end of the market and there's a quality alternative to the f-stop backpacks and accessories.

Damn...wish I'd seen this when it was active! Ian was awesome, and is one of the prime reasons I own an F-Stop bag from back in the day. I'll definitely be taking a harder look into Shimoda; thanks for the head's up, Peter!

The Shimoda bags and carry-on roller are now available at retail, at least in the two big NYC stores Adorama and B&H. I ordered a carry-on roller, ICUs and accessory bags with my kickstarter contribution and the package arrived last week.

The carry-on is just a wee bit shorter than an f-stop Ajna in size.

IMAGE: https://nolan.com/shimoda/DSCN4194PP.jpg
It's very solid, has quality ripstop nylon, mid-size and huge YKK zippers, and two metal bands that run from top to bottom of the case to protect the contents.

IMAGE: https://nolan.com/shimoda/DSCN4195PP.jpg
It also has a very solid roller base. All in all this is a high quality product and I'm sure the bags will be at the same level.

If you own f-stop equipment Shimoda ICUs and accessory bags fit into an Ajna.

The Shimoda ICUs are the same width as an f-stop ICU, but they are about 1/2" shallower. So while Shimoda ICUs fit f-stop bags, unfortunately f-stop ICUs likely will not fit Shimoda bags. All in all, the the materials and construction quality of the carry-on roller is excellent and I expect it to last for a very long time. At last f-stop has some worthy competition.

The only cons that I could find were the Shimoda ICUs and the tags on the zippers. Those tags are leather and flat compared to the f-stop tags which are made from formed plastic which will be easier to grip when wearing gloves in bad weather. As for the ICUs the Shimoda product is thin and hard and IMHO would provide insufficient protection for my lenses and bodies. The f-stop ICUs are more expensive but definitely worth it.

Does anyone have the Shimoda explore 40 backpack?

How do you like it? How much gear can you carry in it?

It's 11" x 22" x 10". Seems pretty small.

Shimoda Designs has an "upgraded" new line of bags called Action X. They come in black and green. Along with the bags there's a new version of their carry-on roller and a larger model called DV to accommodate their biggest ICU (XL DV) from their Action X70 backpack. The new rollers currently only come in black. Shimoda seems uncertain about what to call the new carry-on roller, sometimes it's Action X and sometimes it's just V2.

I've used my blue carry-on a lot, I bought it two years ago and it has held up really well. It has taken a bit of a bashing but it's durable; nothing has torn or broken and the wheels are in great shape and so are the zippers.

The V2 has slightly different dimensions from the first roller, a wee bit narrower and a wee bit taller. Despite being marginally narrower it still fits my f-stop ICUs. The fabric material is the same just a different color. The side pockets are completely flat when empty but have a simple and clever strap mechanism at the top that allows them to bulge out in size much better than the first roller. Also surprisingly to me the wheel assembly has been strengthened and the wheels are bigger, the wheels on mine have taken a hammering and so has the underside of the bag. All in all it seems like a decent upgrade and I'm taking it on my next trip.

Here is the new Action X50, modified with a Seek Outside top lid and an Atlas Adventure hipbelt (by far my favorite hipbelt for any pack I've tried). Thick shoulder straps.

I added the top lid because I like quick access for a few small items. The small stuff tends to get lost in the rolltop section of the X50.

It fits F-stop pro ICUs perfectly.

The adjustable harness allowed a perfect torso length fit.

I like that it finally has side water bottle pockets.

I still prefer my Atlas Athlete, but this is a very good size when I need to carry more than what the compact Athlete is designed for.
