The above images were all shot in AV, Auto ISO; I forgot to change iso range and shutter speed so I might know where I went wrong, however I'm in process of configuring C1 and C2 to compensate for my lack of photography ability. The wetlands where I live I'm having to shoot with the sun/bright light from front on at 2° clock; if 12 straight ahead, therefore water glare is a constant issue.

I shoot in RAW or JPEG, sometimes both.

Custom Mode C1av now set to:

C. FN I Autofocus Tracking sensivity 0, Accel/dcel tracking 0, AF pt auto switching 0, AI Servo 1st image priority middle, AI Servo 2nd image Priority middle, Lens Drive 0, Select AF area all, Limit AF methods all, AF area selection 0, Orientation linked AF point 1, Initial Servo AF pt 1, EOS iTR AF 2, AF point selection movement 0, AF point display during focus 0, VF display illum 0, AF micro adj (not done yet can't see any back or front focusing from these images.

Exposure compensation changed as necessary.

Sigma set to Focus Priority, Dynamic View, I know the Sigma needs some calibration, just have to wait till rain stops so I can get outside to get right distance ranges for focusing chart.

Canon 100-400mm left on default settings.

First, I don't have a 90D so maybe it's different. In your first post, you didn't say if you were using single point, small zone...etc for focus. Does the software you use in post show you the active AF points. It can give you some idea what is going on.

In your second post you list C1 as AI Servo and spot AF but no mention of intended use. If you are using spot AF for BIF then you can definitely track a lot better than I can.

Hi... EOS iTR Tracking 2 ... that is "disable" correct?

Also: why are you using spot focus?

For a flock of BIF I always use 9 point!!!

I shoot manual, auto ISO, f9, 1/1600 or above, evaluative metering,

Glare and moisture in the air are killers. I live in Victoria BC where everyone is trying to duplicate English weather

Thank you for response.

First Post, I was using single point, middle cluster trying to capture a Spoonbill out on the mudflats. I have looked at the image in DPP4 and have switched on focus point overlay. It showed a focus point square on a birds wing, not surprising when the flock came out of nowhere and I a split second to point, back button focus, track and fire off a burst.

Dont have LR or Denoise, just DPP and Gimp.

Second post C1. My primary intended use for this mode is for Otters. There are a couple on the wetlands and they don't stay in view too long before diving. But I take your point about BIF AF setting, much appreciated.

Hi,

EOS iTR disabled.

I was using spot focus to capture a Spoonbill out on the mudflats some 600 metres away when the Godwits came out of nowhere, it was a case of point, track, back button focus and rapid shooting. Probably why it focused a on wing.

Thank you for settings. Will make a note in my camera settings log book.

Your more than welcome to some of your Jetstream flood water back if it would be of any use.

David, I think your issue maybe due to face detection being turned on which I recall reading is a default 90D setting. I suggest turning it OFF or DISABLE.

I also highly recommend you Micro Focus adjust the lens.

I tend to use the focus limiter switch on my 100-400 lens 3m- to infinity or on my 600mm prime 16m - to infinity this increases the speed of focus.

You mention you Back Button Focus, In your settings I would be inclined to go to the shutter button and move the AF to “Metering Start Only”. If you’ve not done already. I usually have the metering set to SPOT.

I only ever shoot for Bird Photography in Aperture Priority Mode AV. Always RAW & AWB also Single Centre Spot AF, this is a personal preference that really always works for me, I don’t use clusters or anything like that. Others may disagree with this but I don’t have a 90d yet and will need to experiment when I do. I never use Custom functions. Just make sure your camera speed is fast enough. You selected 1/2000s for both your BIF shots, which is what I chose. Push up your ISO if camera speed drops.
AI Servo always on and Drive mode set to “High Speed Continuous”.

But I wouldld say it's more about technique and lots & lots of practice.

can you use a raw converter to DNG...i used to have to do that with my 70D files when i used CS4...adobe had one for free on their site

I will definitely make the changes to 100-400mm, and probably set 150-600mm to 10m too, then go out and give it a go, once the gales and rain have stopped.

As to micro adjustments, at 400mm it's hard for me to tell for certain which way it's focusing, but I feel its back focusing slightly, as the Great Tits grey wing markings on the right side are slightly sharper opposed to the eye, but focus point was on the head when viewed in DPP4:

have you put it on a tripod to test for front/back focusing? I feel like that's the first thing to do if you notice something off...i had to adjust both my telephotos on it

I mount 90D to tripod, tried it on the 150-600mm C, with 90D linked to laptop in live view, took series of shoots on a Piston Photography calibration chart at 3 times focal distance conversion in metres, at 150, 250, 400, 600mm. Made a series of fine adjustments with USB dock to lens rather than 90D, without taking lens off tripod. Made adjustments until I had achieved focal point on centre of ruler at each focal length, however, what I found was when I retook another photo through OVF; after making final adjustments, the focal point had moved. I read somewhere people have mentioned the 90D suffers from shutter bounce, so not sure if this is a problem with resulting images, or possibly my Benro tripod is bouncing when shutter released in OVF (tripod weighted down). When rain; 3 weeks solid now, does stop I will get outside with 100-400mm and give it a go with in camera AFM.

But thanks for advice, as always really appreciated.

live view doesn't take into affect any focus mistakes...it uses a different type of AF, so it will always be right on...you need to adjust it through the viewfinder

i think a quick easy test is a live view shot, and then a through the viewfinder shot...if they don't line up something is off

DPP to TIFF is my go to method.

Luminar 4 can open CR3 but the conversion to TIFF isn't quite as good as DPP.

FastStone Image Viewer works fast but the quality of TIFF isn't very good.

Still playing with Affinity Photo (beta version) but it creates TIFF images that are about one stop darker than DPP or Luminar.

Live View will give you correct focus but OVF needs the adjustment. Use Live View to accurately set your target then shot test frames in optical, adjust as needed.

My Sigma 150-600 C needed to move forward by 12 units at 600mm.
