Thank you for response.

I will certainly redo my calibration based on your suggestion.

Much appreciated.

live view doesn't take into affect any focus mistakes...it uses a different type of AF, so it will always be right on...you need to adjust it through the viewfinder

i think a quick easy test is a live view shot, and then a through the viewfinder shot...if they don't line up something is off

There are lenses, though, that have slightly different focus distances wide open, vs stopped down for exposure. I wonder if there can still be problems with that in sensor AF.

You are correct that if the AF through the OVF is different than the AF in Live View, something is off, but what does the Live View add to the process of calibrating the OVF AF? If the OVF AF is not in focus, that is all you need to know that something is off. Unless you are suggesting the use of the Live View image to judge the sharpness of the OVF image. Perhaps some might find that helpful. I suspect that most know what sharp focus looks like.

Put camera on tripod - focus on contrasty subject in good light using live view - then half-press the shutter button (or BBF). If the focus shifts, the viewfinder AF is not optimal.

i feel like something could not be in perfect focus and still appear sharp...with live view you know what the optimal sharpness would be

Great shots!

And a B/W pic that to me looks to work better that way than in color. :-)

Looks like progress. It is a bit puzzling why the first is a bit soft. You had a great subject to focus on. Maybe try again when the light is brighter, and with a higher shutter speed.

Looks like the light and the moisture in the air were bouncing off of each other. Been there. Not much you can do..
