With 1728 and 2875 here I feel duty bound to complete the triumvarate.
The 24GM is primo but as you alluded to, convenience trumps a lot and seems
I always have the 17-28 packed.
But leaving tomorrow and expect no landscaping so I packed the 18, 24, 45 Rokinons
to keep the big zooms company.

Charlie wrote in post #19017545 (external link)
tamron is using their latest "VXD" motor as compared to the "RXD", supposedly faster than the 28-75, which I find quite acceptable. the test was far and close subjects, I'm impressed.

I've got the 24gm already :p

it is really impressive, and I love it. I do find the 17-28 a bit more practical, as f2.8 on FF is pretty good, and 17mm is legit ultrawide, and 28 f2.8 is decent for "normal" shots. if I had to sell off one lens, it would be the 24, but thank goodness, I dont have to. if I only get to keep three lenses, it would be the 17-28, 24gm, and 28-75, I can really make due without all the other gear I have, but dont touch these three..... well, dont touch my 35 f2.8 either :p

I really think I'll end up with the 17-28 now and might get the 24 when I'm a resident in a year.

It's a really tough decision, and if it helps, some green vendor accepted an offer for 1200 last year, for a brand new USA model 24GM, so you might consider that.

The 14th Century Vicars Close in Wells, Somerset, Uk

Wiki -

"Vicars' Close, in Wells, Somerset, England, is claimed to be the oldest purely residential street with original buildings surviving intact in Europe.[3] John Julius Norwich called it "that rarest of survivals, a planned street of the mid-14th century".[8] It comprises numerous Grade I listed buildings, comprising 27 residences (originally 44), built for Bishop Ralph of Shrewsbury, a chapel and library at the north end, and a hall at the south end, over an arched gate. It is connected at its southern end to the cathedral by way of a walkway over Chain Gate.

The Close is about 460 feet (140 m) long, and paved with setts. Its width is tapered by 10 feet (3.0 m) to make it look longer when viewed from the main entrance nearest the cathedral. When viewed from the other end it looks shorter. By the nineteenth century the buildings were reported to be in a poor state of repair, and part of the hall was being used as a malt house. Repairs have since been carried out including the construction of Shrewsbury House to replace buildings damaged in a fire.

The Vicars' Hall was completed in 1348 and included a communal dining room, administrative offices and treasury of the Vicars Choral. The houses on either side of the close were built in the 14th and early 15th centuries. Since then alterations have been made including a unified roof, front gardens and raised chimneys. The final part of the construction of the close was during the 1420s when the Vicars' Chapel and Library was constructed on the wall of the Liberty of St Andrew. The south face includes shields commemorating the bishops of the time. The interior is decorated with 19th century gesso work by Heywood Sumner and the building now used by Wells Cathedral School."

17-28 was my bread-n-butter on the Alaska trip for everything other than animals.
I think once you have it, unless wanting to do wide field astro, you just might pass on the 24GM.

Product photography is tempting, I guess I should see how the 35 fares with that. And I’m curious about the 75-350’s macro capabilities.

No one wants to see my cooking ;) I do take the occasional snapshot of the food I cook but that’s about it.

So, to riff off that idea of product photography, here's a little something. I finally got and picked up, today, my prints from Printique's "2020" promotion. Overall, I can say I'm satisfied with the quality of the print(s) (the promotion was two prints up to 24x36 of the same photo/file for free+shipping). Since I don't know how much they normally cost I can't form an idea if I'd use them again for such big prints (not that I usually need a lot of them in any case). I hadn't chosen anything fancy for paper, but it does the trick, and packaging was more than adequate i.e. sent flat with two protective cardboard sheets+a "cellophane" sheet to protect the top photo itself. Color rendition is fine (I had used corrections at check-out). Nothing like (the last time) I ordered prints from ZNO (8x12 photos) where they actually rolled them up and shipped them in a tight cylinder - after a couple years they're still not flat and just entirely unusable even for the most casual decoration. I wouldn't even have hanged those in my office at work (which is what they were for).

In any case, without further ado (already too much for a simple snapshot of a print haha), here's Cristiana showing off a swimsuit on an Ottawa beach (or the edge of it).

I ended up shooting it with the 85, the 35 was too short for my setup.

Personally the AF tests most you tubers show don't mean anything. I can show you my GFX do same.:) I do like the lens though. I was skeptical of the 28-70mm f2.8 but I am liking it, especially for $700 used price. I may look at the Sigma as sometimes I miss 24mm end. But then now there is 20mm f1.8.

How do you think that they should demonstrate AF? Certainly a real-world test would be ideal, but what they have seems to make sense overall, enough to see that it seems to fare better than the Tamron FE primes. The jury is still out (since the lens obviously isn't) but it would be somewhat tragic to find out that the third member of the trinity is dud (a bit like the SY50/1.4 compared to its wider and longer siblings); seems that things are chugging along well.

What I'd really like to see out of Tamron is an FE version of the EF35-150/2.8-4 which, on its own, would be a better/more versatile studio lens and, especially paired with the 17-28, a likewise more flexible travel lens without losing out too much on portrait capabilities.

I love seeing these old buildings. If you eve visit Wales, check out Caerphilly castle, Van Mansion and St. Fagans, which is now the Natural Museum of Wales. Van Mansion is a private residence so you may have to use a longer lens. :-)

A friend of mine likes an old photo of mine that I took from the beginning of the road that leads to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. This is made of three exposure, three portrait orientation images merged as an HDR panorama. I made this print for him today using my Canon Pixma Pro-100 on Canon Pro Luster paper.

My signature is on this image and not on the print itself. I'll handwrite that on later.

Worth a read if you want to learn more about the art of composition. Caution: It's a long article. It will take some time for me to read it all and digest it.

Meh. I'm sure Canon will blow us away with this camera, I guess, but that still doesn't take away from Sony's quality. And Sony's Eye AF is still superior to Canon's. That camera seems to be a high-resolution contender to the a9/II, I think the a7 line is "safe" for now. If I had the CA$4500 (which I really don't haha) that this camera is rumoured/expected to cost, I'd still rather get an a7r4, since I have no interest in sports or video.
