Help me out with a buying decision: What is better about the a7R IV vs a7R III (besides resolution). Is the EVF significantly better? Improved AF.

I’m just doing a little dream-scheming. A used a7R III would be a whole lot less expensive. Main thing I’m wanting above all else is excellent AF upgrade. The a7R II’s AF is awful “AF”. :p

From what I can see the differences are:

  • Higher res sensor
  • 567 AF points compared to 399 on the RIII
  • Eye AF in video
  • 5.7 mill dot EVF vs 3.6mill
  • Larger grip, weather sealing and build
  • 2 UHS-II slots

A decent amount of upgrades and I think the AF would be the main one for me if it was my decision.

The grip is better for my big hands, especially when combined with the two piece RRS L Plate. I finally have a place for my pinky to hold the camera better. :-D

Or what about a used a9? I can continue using the a7R II for tripod shots with my manual-focus Loxia lenses, but could enjoy a better AF experience with the a9.

The thing I like about this scenario is that it keeps my still-works-fine a7R II relevant while giving me a much better handholding experience.

You know I get told I have large hands, I’m 6 foot tall too but I never found the grip size on any full frame camera uncomfortable or an issue :p I see a lot of people using grips on their A7X bodies though so guess just me haha.

Would you miss the resolution of the R bodies?

No A7X camera grip here. I meant the way my hand gripped the A7R3. It wasn't uncomfortable or a major issue, just annoying. The A7R4/RRS combination fits my hand like a glove.

Oh I meant more having the two/main body as the R. I feel like if you got something like the A9/RIII you might prefer it eventually and not use the RII as much?

Good that you are happy with that combo! For me I like the size of the A7III and I don't think I need it to be any bigger.

It would be extremely heavy but I would love to own one!!

Shouldn't be that bad. That's why it is only till 135mm on the long end. I am happy Canon is coming with this glass but it will be lot more $$.

I am not finding the EVF to be that great. This is when compared to my older GFX50s which had 3.69M pixels. AF looks pretty good to me. Again depends on what you shoot. If moving kids, action/sports then yes, otherwise shouldn't matter. I like the ergonomics of A7rIV, previous bodies weren't as good when I tried them.

I have two sets of lenses that I like for two different purposes. Having two cameras would further split my system and would keep my a7R II relevant. But, if I get an a7R III or IV, then my a7R II will likely sit in its cabinet ignored and unused.

OTOH a serious consideration regarding an a7R IV is that I’d be getting a powerful body for the 200-600mm lens that I’d love to get one day. The a7R IV’s resolution gives it more reach than Sony’s aps-c cameras (AFAIK), which would save me the cost and hassle of wanting/needing the 1.4x and 2x TC with the 200-600mm with a lower res camera.

Compare the EVFs of a7R II, III, IV, and a9...they all about the same in real-world shooting experience?

More camera purchasing contemplation: We’re past due for an a7 IV aren’t we?

Now that I think of it it’s almost certainly coming out this year, so I’m going to hold off deciding on or buying anything till I see all the cool goodies Sony packs into the a7 IV.

Many rumor sites like to say it is but I personally would be surprised to see it. There was 4 years between the II and III so I’d expect to see 3-4 years again. It’s meant to be their ‘basic’ model so it makes sense for them to upgrade it less often and keep the more premium models (R/A9) updated regularly and with higher specs.

My scouting trip led me to his elevated position along a trail. The views were really nice. What I wanted to focus in this image were the rock formations and the dead tree in the foreground. It all reminded me of time and how the massive rocks represent permanence and the tree represented me or the viewer as temporary. I'd be curious to know what y'all think of the image, the message behind it, or perhaps the editing. Thank you.
