Very nice images.

Question if I may: were these at f9 because of an extender, or purely due to the light? Interested to know. Thanks!!

David

More I use 90D the more I'm becoming to appreciate its complexities.

Looks like the light and the moisture in the air were bouncing off of each other. Been there. Not much you can do..

It seems that we naturally tend to overestimate the clarity of air, as our brains can correct for small losses of contrast and loss of acuity at a distance, and it isn't until it reaches a certain threshold, that the low quality is obvious to us.

When I walk into Central Park in NYC many times each year, I often stand in a spot where I can see buildings all around the south, west, and east sides of the park, and all of a sudden, I realize that the air is not quite as clear as it appeared looking only at closer things. Looking in the direction where the sun is behind you gives the most contrast, but even there, you can see that blacks aren't black, but dark grey. When you shoot birds at 100 feet or 30 meters, your eyes may not see the loss of contrast or the softening halos, but when you use a long focal length, and small pixels, it can become much more visible.

There is nothing like actual proximity, to limit atmospheric interference with small details. One of the several reasons I consider "reach" to be a myth.

You certainly bring up some good points. Still, my experience is that some lenses handle problematic atmospherics better than others. So although inevitably you lose IQ with unfavorable atmospheric influences, the lens is still a variable as to how much IQ is compromised. My Pentax DA560 handled difficult harsh and bright light way better than my 400DOII+1.4TC, which is in part due to the 1.4TC and in part due to the DO lens technology. Shooting sunbathing seals, resting on an island, over water with light at an unfavorable steep angle in virtually identical circumstances showed me how large the difference can be.

In a similar fashion, I can imagine that different sensors with different CFA and cover glass also behave differently in difficult light, although nowhere near as obvious as the lens difference I imagine.

Both... I used to leave it at just f8 all the time but now I've decided that I get a better snap at f9 so I have locked it at f9. I shoot Auto ISO and Manual. When there is plenty of light the IQ is magnificent!!

Nice!

The 90D is the most underrated camera of the year. It's the best thing I've ever used for aircraft. I have the 1DX and 1DXII, I will not be getting the 1DXIII because I'm certain it won't hold a candle to the 90D (for aircraft and birds in flight).

it was for Jay, but i think i confused him with someone else that was shooting airshows earlier in the thread...i don't think Jay was the one using live view for in flights now that i looked back to the begining
