Or what about a used a9? I can continue using the a7R II for tripod shots with my manual-focus Loxia lenses, but could enjoy a better AF experience with the a9.

The thing I like about this scenario is that it keeps my still-works-fine a7R II relevant while giving me a much better handholding experience.

This is what I use, the A9 AF is great very fast and locks on, if you get a 200-600mm then the A9 is the best body to have with it, I have used it with a x1.4 TC. It will lock up at f11 or better.

I also use Loxia lens with the A7Rii, keeping this would allow you to get the x1.4TC with the money you save. Also think about the file size of the A7Riv.

This sounds great. I appreciate your helpful experienced feedback!

Some fresh photos from me from......uh.......well.......Thanksgiving (late November).

These were just taken on while on my daily walks in the neighborhood in West Point, Georgia. Don’t you just love the long crisp shadows you get on Autumn days? I do for sure. These were captured with the a7R II and Sigma 35mm 1.2 and edited entirely in LR on the iPad Pro.

I wish Adobe would hurry up and get LR and PS more complete for iPad...these tools are badly under developed. LR is pretty decent, but still missing a lot of stuff I rely on, but PS is an unusable pool of sewage.

I’ve been contemplating this for a while. Repurchase an a7rii for landscape and get smooth reflections back (really miss that). And get a used a9 for kids photos etc (selling the a7riii)

For a long time now, I’ve wanted to have a camera with a great toolset for capturing people in cities. I’m not an extravert so I like doing it as discreetly as possible (100% silent shutter/zero rolling shuter/zero blackout are perfect). A great AF system that will glue to my subject would be amazing. Also a high fps would allow me choose the exact body position I want. In other words, although I’m hardly a serious photographer anymore, I’d still greatly benefit from and get the most out of the unique capabilities of the a9.

Just for fun I’ve been searching for a9 II reviews (YT) and not finding much. I deduce the a9 II must be a pretty underwhelming upgrade over the original a9.

As you know I don’t shoot sports so probably talking out of school here but it seems to me the a9 is everything I’d ever want and I wouldn’t pay the premium for the 2

Day 5 of Sony 200-600 ownership. Definitely a keeper!
One complaint (nothing is perfect...) no manual focus override unless I'm missing it.
I know I can use DMF, but DMF seems to be AF-S only.

I have had a few BIF scenarios where I have difficulty acquiring initial lock, when focus is at a long way from distance to subject.
With manual focus override I would just manually focus to (very) roughly in focus, then the AF would have an easy job acquiring focus.

With 1.4TC:

Compare the EVFs of a7R II, III, IV, and a9...they all about the same in real-world shooting experience?

I agree they all look the same to me even when I go from the rIV to my EM1X , for birding I'm looking through the VF not really at it .

It's not something to be concerned about .

The A9ii was an upgrade for the pro sports photographers, going to the Olympics. If you look at Patrick Murphy-Racey (sports photographer) on Youtube, you will find he tells you what the upgrades are and why he wanted them.

I have two sets of lenses that I like for two different purposes. Having two cameras would further split my system and would keep my a7R II relevant. But, if I get an a7R III or IV, then my a7R II will likely sit in its cabinet ignored and unused.

OTOH a serious consideration regarding an a7R IV is that I’d be getting a powerful body for the 200-600mm lens that I’d love to get one day. The a7R IV’s resolution gives it more reach than Sony’s aps-c cameras (AFAIK), which would save me the cost and hassle of wanting/needing the 1.4x and 2x TC with the 200-600mm with a lower res camera.

From my very limited knowledge (no first hand experience) there is an issue with 200-600mm lens on A7rIV. Check the forums and you will see it.

I've heard the same......

A friend of mine has been looking into a similar long telephoto solution for wildlife. I think for the ones that want extra reach with a high resolution camera, they may have to settle of an A7r3. Or 24MP A9(ii) solution and use TC.

Shouldn't be that bad. That's why it is only till 135mm on the long end. I am happy Canon is coming with this glass but it will be lot more $$.

It'll probably be expensive for sure. Even the Canon RF 28-70 f/2 is still 3900 CDN. I am not a fan of 28mm so this was a bummer.......

Really looking forward to a potent Canon FF mirrorless body that is catching up to Sony. That would be a really affordable path for me to stick with Canon and reap the benefits of mirrorless tech.

So far in the Sony world I would like to see a higher MP A74 sensor with similar A73 high iso performance. High resolution sony bodies will be less of a priority for me in my application or I go A9 or A9mk2 $$
