Any FE 135mm GM lovers on here?

Time and again 135mm has proven out to be one of favorite FLs. And lately I’ve had a growing hankering to upgrade my Batis 135 to the Sony FE 135mm GM.

I’ve always loved the weight/size of the Batis 135 and I won’t be selling my Batis immediately after buying the GM, but I’m sure I’d enjoy having that extra bit of subject/background separating bokeh along with low light performace of f/1.8. This isn’t a need - it’s pure want. But, the idea of pairing my awesome bokeh-master Sigma 35mm 1.2 with another bokeh-master at 135mm is very appealing to me.

I’m as undecided as ever about a camera upgrade. I may just wait it out till the a74 drops just to fully sort through my options.

Now if I could only upgrade out of this horrendous SE USA weather (non-stop rain - our lawn is under water right now).

I love my 135GM.

It's hard to say David. Short term it looks like a support level around 25k in the dow has been established so you could trade the day to day volatility, but this coronavirus thing is really fluid and starting to escalate in the US so it will likely fall even more in the coming weeks if we don't get it under control

Long-term...it depends on whether or not you believe this will pull us into recession. If so, we likely haven't seen the big drop just yet and if you look at the last couple of recessions, it takes several years to recover from a technical recession in terms of stock prices. i.e. prior to the 2008 financial crisis the dow peaked at 17k in september 2007. It did not recover from that until 2013. Granted 2008 was a particularly bad recession and the banking system itself was fundamentally broken in ways that is not right now.

Inevitably we'll see the markets drop even further if this coronavirus stuff starts pushing up against companies reporting first quarter results after having their supply chains disrupted and sales impacted by the coronavirus.

I'm excited with the rumor that Sony is going to add low resolution raws for the 7RIV.

Vinz I lived about 2.5 blocks from that bridge on Arbutus when I was in grad school.

Third image I was able to finish yesterday...I started a 4th but the computer crashed on it...

This one...I wish I had gone out to scout this location first. It is hard to find good mud crack patterns in the dark...it is slow and you have to be careful not to step on the good mud tiles...and this was the best sunrise we had, and I kinda blew it...this shot was before the sun came up and the clouds lit up. I liked this curled up tile and the textures left on it from recent heavy rain...but i didn't like the color...so I went black and white. It was a tough edit, 3 images, for focus and DR...

The rumour of a smaller RAW files is really fantastic. I think Sony is actually listening

This full size RAW was the deal breaker for me in buying the A7r4. This camera world has now become so incredible in features.

Holding out to see the Canon R5 for my Canon kit. Analyzing portraits there is definitely something special in how Canon renders human subjects regardless of what Canon body is used. I'm anticipating a good 5 grand Canadian for this R5 Camera.

The A74 on the the horizon still seems like a no brainer for me. My assumption is that the A73 and A74 will still be much better in cleaner files than the A7r4 with a mRAW or sRAW compression. If the R5 is still not "there" in performance the A7r4 is a logical step for me for other applications that do not require high iso performance.

Well I spent some time getting all the accessories together and digging the box out of the closet so I could list it this weekend..

Now this rumor... hmmm..what to do?

The more one can buy in as the market plummets the quicker the recovery will be from the bottom. The inverted yield curve last year convinced me to go mostly to cash and wait for the historically typical ensuing market crash 12-24 months after the inversion. We may have a long way down yet to go, so need to pace myself and spend wisely/carefully. No new Sony camera gear for me till we’ve found the market’s bottom!

The clouds are hanging over the scene like a purpose-built canopy meant to frame the image. Looks great!

On the one hand I’ve been excited about the idea of 61MP for some high detail shooting as well as 26MP in crop mode with a 200-600mm, but I’ve also been turned off to a whole bunch of 61MP files jamming up my Drobos. So, if Sony can give us some serious resolution options that could go a long way towards convincing me to go with that camera. I’d really love it if they would allow a 30.5 MP (half size) raw...it would be perfect for my wants.

Wonder if the lower res options would improve the a7R IV’s high ISO noise performance?

Looks great. I keep seeing comments about its incredible focusing speed...makes it uniquely capable for sports like that. Very cool!

Yeah there were some indicators that a correction is coming, and there have been concerning long-term trends that aren't sustainable (cost of living and housing affordability issues, corporate/consumer/gov​ernment debt levels) but unlike 2008, there have been no glaring signs of distress that could set things off. IF coronavirus disrupts the normal course of life for an extended period of time, it could create that distress and become the catalyst that breaks the camels back on a lot of things that have been in question for a while.... but its only ever certain in hindsight.

This is big news if you really think about it!!

If I didn't still own all of my Canon EF mount L glass and consider the Canon R5 using a lens adapter, I would just put more emphasis on purchasing an A7r4. I just appreciate Canon for it's different render of human subjects.

I prefer Canon on human subjects a lot more than Sony render. This is where Sony to my eyes is fantastic for cityscape, landscape, wildlife and automotive etc.

The A7r4 will probably entice many users now due to a possible smaller RAW file. That's serious game changer IMO.

I agree, thanks! It made a nice dark top edge to keep the eye in...this is the kind of conversation I was just having with my dad...studying how the viewers eye will move through an image, and the goal is to keep them coming back and moving through and around, rather than leaving.
