Not my usual forum to post and share, but just got back from Fairbanks, Alaska where I went just for this purpose. Had 2 very good nights for Aurora sighting and shooting.

Gorgeous, shot!

I always wonder, with aurora shots... Was this how it appeared to the naked eye, or did the 5 second exposure bring out the colour?

The human eye does not see colors well in the dark. Cone cells, responsible for color perception do not respond well in low light levels. The colors are there, we just dont see them. Integrating in the camera allows the color intensity to be recorded. The exposure here is not a terribly long exposure, just 5 seconds, but brings out more than the eye can see.

This is an approximation of how it looked to the human eye. You clearly see the existence of the lights, just not the full beauty of them.
