These "Concept Cars" are one off cars. Not a handful. They are hand built to showcase new styling and/or new technology. The first of this type of car was the Buick Y-Job built in 1938:

Yes, and no.

The Buick Y-Job is far from being the first of its type.
And the concepts are frequently, but not always, one-off cars.
While the Y-Job is widely considered the first concept made
largely for public display, the fundamental history of concepts
predates 1938 by a long shot.

Concept models can be traced to the beginnings of vehicle-making,
while it was later that they began to be displayed to the public.
They began as in-house experiments, and later made their way
into the public view.

Thanks for including the bit of recorded history for these cars. :-) Was this the prototype for the Batmobile? ;-)a

The Captain and crew finally got their stuff together, now if we can only remember where we left it.

I saw a picture or two of this car a few years before it was displayed
at the 2010 Meadow Brook Concours show, and when I learned that
it was to be displayed, I made sure to grab some photos.

With as crowded and well-attended as that year's event was,
I was fairly surprised to have gotten the shots I did.

I can't even define what it is about this one-off which so tantalizes me,
but I think it's a stunner.
