New to Sony here, switching from Canon. These look really sharp, is there any reason to get the 100-400 over this? I have the a7 III. Interested in wildlife and sports.

You should know your most used focal lengths. If you don't need 600mm the 100-400 has some advantages. The primary deciding factory for many is size. If you travel a lot, this is a substantially larger lens vs the 100-400 which is telescopic and therefore packs up much smaller. One other reason aside from the obvious slight advantage in aperture is MFD. The 100-400 focuses much closer.

All that said, I'm leaning towards the 200-600 and in the case of travel, might rent the 100-400.

Just wondering if the Sony 200-600 can be used with any A6XXX series camera? and if so any comments on usability/eye focusing would be appreciated.

Hi folks, looking for advice...

I plan on renting the 200-600mm for an air show that takes place in 3 weeks.
I'll have to rent a camera as well. I only own Canon gear. I have 3 cameras in mind...

The A6600 or A9 or A9II.

I like to photograph the small aerobatic planes high in the sky. So I think the crop sensor on the A6600
may be a good choice. I've also read that is has excellent AF performance. Cost of rental for 7 days is about $80.

But the A9 or A9II is top notch in AF performance and excels in sports/action photography. Because it's a FF camera,
it won't have the "reach" that the A6600 offers. But I can always crop the FF image. Besides, the lens gives me up to
600mm, which is almost 200mm more that my Canon lens offers. I don't know what the IQ difference is between the
A9 and A6600. Air shows are usually in bright sun, and I shoot in low ISO (100 or 200). Renting the A9 or A9II will cost
around $245 for 7 days. Add more money to rent the grip.

One more consideration...I have only 3 weeks to download the camera/lens manuals and start reading. Then configure the
camera settings. That will take time, and I think (maybe) that the A6600 is simpler to setup.

I'm open to advice, thanks.

When you see my camera gear you'll think I'm a pro.
When you see my photos you'll know that I'm not.

Frank, I can't help on the a6600 since I opted for the lesser-priced a6400 as I didn't see $500 worth of difference in them. The a6400 is excellent at tracking. I also shoot an a9mkI and it does a great job with the 200-600. I haven't heard absolute praise for the mkII over the I but if the same price go for the newer I suppose. Its a little larger form. Good luck with choosing.

Thanks Bill.
Unless I get a compelling reason not to, I think I'll start by renting the A6600. Doing so will save me a good chunk of money. Not sure how this small camera/large lens will handle together, but it shouldn't be too bad.

And I have to consider how many batteries I need to bring. Some times I'll take 1k shots in a day. The 200-600 might use a lot of battery power.

I own this lens and the R4, however... I also own the a9. I'm not gonna lie... I gave the R4 and this lens several tries, but I just couldn't get it to focus good. After several attempts, I decided to just keep using it on the a9. I am NOT the only one claiming this issue. But at the same time, I've seen people post some amazing shots taken with the combination (R4 + 200600G). So, I don't know what's going on. I'm hoping eventually, there will be some kind of firmware update to address the issue.

THAT being said. All the times I tried using this lens with the R4, I was using it with the 1.4x TC, I never got around to trying it without it. So, that might be the caveat.

Manual focus at 840mm is a little tricky but the distance meter in the EVF really helps to get started.
