By the look of his feet it looks like he is standing in a small valley so it most likely would be Ice & Water shield, hard to tell from the angle though. Michael

I imagine the Tyvek is the layer before the final cladding.

lucky7 Goldmember More info Post edited over 3 years ago by lucky7. | They'll put a water shield on, then a felt or fiberglass layer, then shingles. Tyvek is the plastic stuff that goes on before the siding - not on the roof. -Dane

You'll see a variety of different materials used, asphalt shingles are most common (cheapest), but you'll see metal roofs, clay tiles, stone, etc. -Dane

Grizz1 Goldmember More info | Apr 03, 2020 22:09 | #780 Richard, where I live it's common practice to use plywood 1/2" thick or 5/8 over rafters 16"OC, ice shield in valleys, there are different widths and thickness of that, then synthetic felt fastened with electric zip stapler and cap nails, then asphalt shingles to finish. Cost always seems to be a factor and location will differ across the country but where I live that is common. The synthetic felt has become a replacement for tar paper (felt paper) and is much easier to apply, does not wrinkle, has a slip resistant side, available in different grades and roll sizes and made by several companies. Tyvek by Dupont is one and there are many other names and brands. I use tyvek house wrap under siding but prefer an off brand synthetic felt for roofing that has a rough texture I can walk more easily without roof brackets. Steve
