Take a look at the original image's EXIF data - the shutter speed is 20sec. It would appear that the camera is being used in intervalometer mode (time lapse) with a long shutter speed. Just like regular flash photography, the SS setting gives you the ambient exposure (for the landscape) and the lightning strike provides plenty of light whose exposure can be controlled by the aperture.

Because the shutter is open for so long, the camera is just waiting for a lightning strike while it is exposing the ambient landscape.

And, of course, you need lightning!

Just got the XT-3 and the 50mm f2 may switch for the 56mm f1.2. At the moment I'm still learning how to customize the menu. Will see next week...

I haven't used one, but I thought there were light-sensitive triggers, also.
