Two shots from my favorite Japanese restaurant which allowed some local photographers to shoot their dishes. As you can tell I’m a novice when it comes to food photography, but hoping to get better.

Working up some test shots for a new client. I'm creating a bunch of individual food shots and simple recipes to use their sauce with.

Congratulations on finding a client in a tough market.

Your sample shot looks good to me except that perhaps the background is a little too busy.

The background on the left does bug me. Also the product name and placement on all the labels is a different size, they were hard to arrange.

Old school marinara and a side of sausage.

Gotta congratulate you on how neatly you managed to lay out the spaghetti. Plating is nicely done. Attention to detail is super. But I do have to agree that there are a few too many distractions from the hero. The elements are nice, but too many of them in the same frame, I feel. Maybe fill more of the frame with the plate? Have more images using a lesser amount of elements in each image?

Very nice overall tho.

Thanks for our input. I clearly see your point. I don't really disagree, but I went in a different direction.

If you look at the labels for this sauce they are very different than another in the product category. They sell sauce based off of the origin story of a grandson making sauce with is grandfather since he was a little boy. It is a sentimental sell. So I decided to be different than another sauce pictures that are used for marketing. All of them are just product shots of the bottle or a very sterile white on white plate with perfect pasta and sauce. The shots I'm creating are of the food at a celebration or a nice dinner (the one with the marinara and sausages is based off my memory of eating at grandma's), some crumbs on the table, drinks in same shots and what looks like a nice dinner. I even have a breakfast shot planned. Whether or not it works is a different question :)

Also the way I shoot is I take photos as I build and deconstruct (eat) the scene. I shoot with two cameras one above for a flat lay and one hand held. I have isolated shots of the food and shots with a much tighter crop too, so hopefully I am my client are covered for marketing with the pictures.

More in the sauce series. This is a shot of the full scene, I have detail shots and different in camera crops.

Ah, I see. The storytelling certainly makes a difference.
