Sometimes no matter how much "reach" you have, the subject is too far away. I had the pleasure of seeing whales when we were in Hawaii earlier this year, but they were way far out. Luckily the lens did fairly decent even at that huge distance. This one is cropped, but I think it's not too bad...

When I had the 50-500mm I never shot it wide open, always shot at f/8. The same goes with this lens, but I wanted to see how it did at f/6.3. I was surprised it did so well, I expected some fuzziness or focus issues, but had none.

The only stupid question is the one that goes unasked - Photographers shoot to thrill, not to kill

I almost screwed this up by not upping the ISO to get a faster shutter, but it worked out ok. This is hand-held and significantly cropped.

I'm finding out that this lens is so much better with the 5D4 than with the original 7D, although it was still a very good lens with that camera.

I recently picked up a used copy of this lens.
I haven't used it much but, am very pleased thus far. The close range AF seems very accurate and fast enough to keep up with these guys.
