I realised it was vague! North or south of Christchurch?

No

What a good question. I had to check on Google maps. No, I was not looking north.

Is it Christchurch itself?

It is in Christchurch, but I think it is sufficiently characteristic that a little more precision is needed.

IF you mean you are literally looking North to the port hills (that what I guess is the high ground) then that would suggest Lyttleton... but I darned if I can find a piece of single, straight track in the area.

Everywhere else that I can see train tracks is north or west of the Port Hills. If you were looking south I would have suggested Sydenham or Ferrymead...

Funny, once you mis-read something, one's mind continues to see it the way it was first read... Thanks fo the correction!

OK then. Sydenham or Ferrymead?

Yeh... Nah...

I KNOW... the challenge is the proximity of the hills, which I take to be the Port Hills (otherwise it's flat as...) but you are right, lots of curves in those areas, or dual lines and no street close to the track on the E side. Hmmm...-?

found the spot, it's not far from the Al Noor Mosque where so many folks lost their lives last year.

Yes ... you got it. It was the proximity that let me feel that a bit of straight track was legitimate. It is looking towards the Port Hills from the Riccarton Road (actually right beside Nando's Chicken Emporium).

Over to you

thanks - I was thinking that building on the right was getting either late afternoon sun or earlyish morning, hence the question about direction. :-) I'll post something new shortly.

The corner of Tollbooth Street and High Street, to be precise.
