Editing someone's photo and reposting without permission is a big no-no around here.

kiwichris wrote in post #19052565 (external link)
I did not realise that had changed, as I originally had in my name bit that editing was ok. So how do you show someone with out editing, just by words?

I don't mind. Asking first would be ok too, but I don't get bent like others do. I don't want to do more work in post than what I do in camera so while I appreciate your edit Chris, it's not what I'm after.

About 9 months ago I started like you. I had shot many other subjects with various lighting conditions for many years but wanted to get better with cars.

It is a lot of work but I enjoyed the new challenge. I’m not there yet but I’ve been learning. Not sure if these are what you wanted but here are some samples of what I’ve done. I’ll post a couple more and have a few more in my gallery

This is exactly the style I want. Do you remember how you lit this one? I don't see a softbox reflection, but you could have removed it in post. OR, you painted the car with a flashlight... inquiring minds want to know

I don’t have set up images.

My shots are usually done in evening car shows and car meets. So I use lights to eliminate the background.

the image you like was shot with an ad360 in a soft box. It was done with multiple exposures. Camera was on a tripod and I have a remote trigger. I walk around the car holding the light exposing sections of it. I then combine in post and remove the unwanted reflections. I’m trying to mimic studio without a studio. It’s taken a lot of trial and error. Try to keep the main light from a logical direction- above or the same side.

I also sometimes use an LED light stick to just do several long exposures as I walk around the car. The light stick creates long flowing specular highlights on the shiny paint which I usually try to remove.

Here are two more examples. First image was with an ad360. Second was a light stick.

how big was the softbox, given the fladsh unit is so small? I could see using a small'ish 12" box, unless the box was supported independently of the flash unit.

It’s 2 ft by 1.5 ft I believe. But I’ve shot with bare bulbs as well. At the end I am removing most of the highlights

Nice shots. Do you have a rig? I am in the process of putting one together. Just need to pickup the avenger cups.

natural light, or did you have help. I don't see much image left, so I'm going with natural

LOVE that ! Very dramatic, and cinematic ! Reminds me a little of Rebel without a Cause - the fateful drag race ! And for those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, you owe it to yourself to find that film and watch it!

Does it hold up ? Maybe not entirely, but there are so many iconic moments in there. BTW, has anyone NOT seen it ? Just curious.

I'm mainly here for the snacks

Thank you. It’s one of my favorite shots especially of that series.
