My manual focus ring is totally locked up. No movement whatsoever. Auto focus still works fine. Anyone else ever had this problem? Thanks for any info. I really don't want to send it in because I rarely us MF. Just would like to have it right.

For me, it was the zoom ring. Super stiff and impossible to move slowly for fine adjustments. For a friend of mine, it was the focus ring (like yours). Both of us sent in our lenses for Canon repair. Fully covered at no additional cost (other than shipping). I know that you said you don't want to send it in, but I'd recommend considering that. For every day that you don't send it in, you'll be annoyed by this behavior. After I got mine back, I was happy and haven't even thought about it until this thread reminded me.

In my two cases, it was about 4 (or so?) years ago, so not likely the same batch of lenses. But hearing about stiff rings on the 24-105 seems troubling...

Yes I do:-) This one isn't stiff. It is totally locked up. Worked great one day and none at all the next. I don't recall bumping it and it wasn't dropped. Looking at alternatives right now. 55th anniversary coming up before too long and wife said pick out something I want.

Hi!

I had my 24-105L Zoom EF communication bus just "blow out" on me one day--when it happened i could tell there was an electrical "misfire" going on internally.

After that the entire thing wouldn't work. It's not the same problem exactly, but the root cause as described by the repair ticket when it came back was that the motor had to be replaced along with a bunch of other internal components, but the biggest (physical) change was they had to completely replace the internal barrel (I don't recall the exact term they used, but it's the barrel that travels away from and towards the rest of the outer lens). When this happened I remember not being able to control it through the manual ring (both). It wasn't frozen, just didn't change the zoom by any significant amount and focus was not possible, auto or manual.

So I guess my point is, if you feel like something "broke" by using commons sense input and output reasoning, you're probably right.

My problem occurred after 2-3 years of usage. How long have you owned this?

All the best

Mine came with a 6D Kit. It was shipped fro B&H in March of 2013. It worked one day and totally frozen the next. I used it all day yesterday while touring some gardens and the AF works fine so things are moving inside.

Ok, back for a confession even though I probably shouldn't. The red ring on my 24-105 had broken and would slide around. I used a couple of drops of super glue to fasten the ends. It fastened the ring and also glued the focus ring to front part of the lens. Remembered doing this while lying in bed one night. I manage to get the ring off up to the ends where they had been glued and with the help of a little 90% alcohol got the ends off and the ring loose. We old people can do the darndest things;

If any of you need anything glued to stay, this is a unpaid testimonial for Loc-Tite Super Glue.
