Life in the age of Social Distancing - what are you up to?

I was able to get some more done on the she shed today. The weather was once again glorious. I should finish up the framing tomorrow. The first picture shows progress, the second shows the shed as viewed from the back deck of our house, taken yesterday evening.

California now has an official list of permitted outdoor activities. Photography is included. What a relief that is!

No mention of outdoor sketching or painting, though.

yay ...i think it's kinda crazy that i feel like the bay area was one of the firsts to undergo the strict shelter in place...and we'll probably be one of the last to get out of it...i did get out the other day and found this tree with some feathers that made me really happy though

Those of us living in the SF Bay area counties have been under the shelter-in-place which made exercise outdoors legal while limiting outside activities for other purposes. Recently a list of newly permissible outdoor activities has been generated, and on this list is 'outdoor photography'. Once again it is possible for us to engage in that activity!

but it all has to be near your home...within walking/biking distance...that's the part that is killing me...

I still have not seen a published list of allowable activies, along with stated restrictions imposed upon those activities. I saw a list on a TV news shot, and 'outdoor photography' was clearly visible...but not on a web-available list. I want to see the list along with restrictions.

but there is nothing explicit about restrictions on those activities. Restrictions 'in the neighborhood' are in the context of outdoor excercise, which we have been living with for the past 6 weeks.
Another article on the topic says only, "All of these activities are allowed as long as they're done only with members of your household and if you maintain a distance of six feet from others."

...still no explicit distance limitations, such as had been imposed by San Mateo Co. health on going elsewhere for walks/jogs, so as to create limitations on everyone flocking to the beach at once.

Thanks, I really wanted 'official' site, like State or Country Health...the SFGate or TV News stations I considered to be secondary 'interpretations'.
The reason for this is that I had seen newspaper stories stating that Gov. Newsom had set a goal of '60000 to 80000' tests, when in fact I heard him state 'at least 60000' on a video taken of him during the initial statement.
I remember his number because I immediately did the calculation to see how long it would take to test 80% of the California population, testing at 60000 per day...1.46 years, if testing 7 days per week including holidays.

Thanks Tom! We are on six acres, and I do enjoy the rural lifestyle.

Unfortunately we had a little drama this afternoon. I was working on the shed when I could see a storm rolling in. Then crazy winds started blowing and I saw some trees losing big limbs at my neighbor's house. I ran to my house and took my wife and two year old son into our master closet where we waited for things to calm down. After the winds eased it rained hard for a little while before turning pretty with a stunning sunset.

It was frustrating to get rained out because I was really being productive. Yesterday I finished the framing and today I was beginning to enclose the structure. I am pretty pleased with how it is looking.

Second picture doesn't really show it, but that is a pretty big limb, about ten inches in diameter. I'll try to cut it free tomorrow. I think that was our only notable damage, lots of smaller branches to pick up though.

Such discussion may ruin it for all. I worry that if this thread comes to resemble the thread that was shut down, it'll meet the same fate.

Folks out here in the dark don't know exactly what we did to kill that other thread. Presumably "forum rules" were broken, but which ones? Some of us are tiptoeing around a hugely traumatic topic, the kind that produces a felt need to talk, without guidelines.

Kind of sad the other thread got shut down but I sort of saw it coming.

I apologize to others for having 'crossed the line' in injecting some statistic. My intent was not discussion/debate of approach and the statistical evlidenc, but to talk about what my household was currently doing -- continuing to shelter in place as directed by authorities -- and the background facts about knowing folks currently in the middle of fighting COVID-19...one of whom is still in a questionable (although currently hopeful) path of progress.

^ agreed about the mysterious end to that last thread. Perhaps if some explanation about the reason were provided, folks just might understand and not blunder, committing a No-no.

No apology necessary Wilt - you talked about what you were currently doing as well as your feelings about friends and relatives close to you. How can it NOT affect your day to day living? You care about these people.

The title of this thread should perhaps be changed. It should say "What are you up to?" Mentioning the virus in the title draws people to talking about it but that is not what the thread is about.

I'm OK if the mods change it and even modify your suggestion.

Well, I am still in full isolation in NZ, but we are encouraged by the fact that we not only had no new cases for two days in a row, but the count went down one as it was initially mis-identified as COVID.

We have been having embarrassingly good weather here, in fact we are over five months into a dry spell, the worst in living memory. In Auckland, a city of about 1.5 million, our reservoirs are down to about 45%, so we need rain - lots of it for a long time.

Yesterday and today we got a taste of that with heavy squalls, thunder and the odd hailstone event. Note the bent trees in the background of the following image.

I've been making face masks, the Olson type with HEPA filters and finally got my stuff organized!!! Yay.
So, when a new order comes in, I just grab whatever color and assemble them. Before I had a mess and and was going through pieces of fabric rather blindly. No more.
