there are some settings that you should do out the box:

1. Auto save. Davinci Resolve -> Preferences -> User -> Project Save and Load and use either live save and or project backups every 10 minutes. Nothing more frustrating than losing a bunch of work because the app crashed for whatever reason.
2. Video cache, set the location if you have a spare NVME/SSD, Davinci Resolve -> Preferences -> System -> Media Storage

it has one other quirk in that whatever you want your playback footage output to be in, like 4K30 for instance, import just 1 clip when starting your project, and that clip needs to be 4K30. If you mix and match different frame rates (like 4K30 + 1080p120fps + 4K24), you can get your settings all screwed up. It's a really odd quirk and cant seem to change settings after the fact.

that should get you started, the "Cut" tab at the bottom is geared towards beginners, however I find the full "Edit" tab much faster with CTRL+ALT+[and CTRL+ALT+] (trim to left and right), so it might be simpler to learn the edit tab right from the start.

My general workflow is once I import all footage, ESPECIALLY 4K, select all, right click, generate optimized media, I wont work on the files till this is done. it's added work, but having a responsive UI is important for me. Generally not an issue with 1080 footage.

If there was a font option 'flashing, changing colour, with audio sound - air horns' I would have used that...

Charlie, all installed and default settings made as you advised. Loaded up some 4K footage and generated optimised footage. All seems to be working ok. Im now away to watch some youtube videos on cutting and splicing but so far it looks like a feature packed bit of software! Im excited to put something together now

I hope your rendering out to the final project goes smoothly. It's been a while since I've looked at Davinci Resolve. Does it let you add titles, etc. too?

Hi Gene, it says you can "Import SRT files or manually create subtitles and closed captioning" and also "Quickly add professionally designed Fusion 2D and 3D titles". It seems to do everything to be honest, I just dont know how to yet

Great! Just have fun learning and take things one step at a time. I discovered quickly that editing video is nothing like still photography and so the learning curve can get daunting, depending on how deeply you get into it.

...And, I like to say that "I don't know just how much I don't know yet".

Yes. And that part of it is very intuitive. Jut make a jpg. Place it in the timeline. It will default to several seconds, just stretch or shrink it to your desired length.

Manfrotto MBAG80P (P for padded) tripod bag.
It is a little long but still convenient to carry Alpha camera and 200-600 with hood in shooting position.
Strap over shoulder I find it very comfortable. For rougher terrain strap cross body / shoulder, like a sling strap.

Kids have taken over every room in the house so I've never really had a study . Just this nook in the kitchen. It works

I added a 4k monitor and just organized this whole area so its cleaner and more functional. I even bought some extra long usb-b wires and hid my two 8tb external hard drives.

Surface book display sitting below the monitor because I love my touch screen.

^^ Nice setup. Do these surface have enough horsepower for C1, LR etc? I was thinking of getting a new laptop as currently I use my work MBP but not sure how much to go, cost wise. The new MBPs are kind of expensive.

well outfitted Surface Pro's are not cheap either...they are super nice, my only issue with them is the internal hard drive capacity. But I have a Pro 4, and love it when I am on the road, thin, lightweight and fast...but mine is only 512GB...that goes fast on a multi-day trip. So I have a Sandisk 1TB external SSD that I carry, and have to store everything on that.

CTRL + B is basic split, CTRL + Shift + [or] is to chop to next end point, by far the most useful cutting shortcuts you need to trim down clips.

It’s full featured, you can definitely grow into it! Free is awesome, but if you ever get into 10 bit H264/H265, then you need to pay for the full version. The coloring/key frame workflow is a bit odd, but I’m sure there are tutorials for that. The ability to save your own LUTS is really sweet.

Yes, you can combine them with transition to make animated text.

Silly question, Do you know how to add some graphs and stuff into video? Was going to do some performance reviews of a thing and wanted to add some simple graphs to get the point across but im reallly terrible at that stuff
