Are the 'knees' like pneumatophores on mangroves, allowing the trees to 'breathe' during floods?

From what I have heard and read they don't serve any purpose. They just are.

That's unusual, plants don't usually waste energy growing things that have no purpose or competitive advantage.

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

I'm sure the knees serve some purpose that we humans haven't figured out. It is strange that some of the Bald Cypress in the same grove have knees and others don't. Some have tons of knees. Some are pointy. Some are knobby. Some are sharp 90 degree angles with no real knee.

Nature is wonderfully diverse.

Charles, I've got the same affliction, and lucky to have several good sloughs with lots of big voodoos in large crowds.Well, it doesn't take much for my rich imagination to turn them into something spooky. The tallest one I've found is 12' tall, although it isn't as anthropomorphic as many others. Right now they are all under about 8' of water, but maybe later this Summer if your interested in taking a road trip, you can meet me down at my cabin for a photo safari in S central AR.

Thanks for the kind offer. Hopefully this stay at home stuff ends so we can start thinking about photo trips again.
