These swallows are really tough to nail with any lens, they flit so fast

yeah, it was manual but auto ISO and blew the highlights. The light was changing really fast, I was there shooting geese and looking for the blue heron have never seen a Great Egret in my entire life!

We used to have to ride the exposure far to the right, ETTR or HAMSTTR to tame the noise fo the old sensors,. underexposing was a recipe for a noisy image.
You've got that magical 5D4, and with that, you can be waaaaay underexposed and still get a great image. Remember that next time Big White is in your sights! It doesn't have to be such a balancing act, a little under exposed is no problem at all.

Swallows will give you a headache! I have been trying to get one as they grab a bug off the water. Here is my best so far
