P.S. Most of the time you're the reason why the photo turned out well and not the gear. If the light is good, and your composition skills are on point, you could have taken that shot with a cell phone that has one of those special cell phone macro lenses attached to it.

Surprisingly (to me) there are many excellent macro photos done on cell phones. The photographers using this type of gear seem to be mostly east Asians. I'm impressed, but so far have resisted doing this type of photography myself.

I follow a few on Facebook, and one of them switched to a DSLR only because the sensor quality is better. But if all you're doing is publishing images to the web a cell phone will work just fine, provided your composition skills are on point and you're shooting in some decent light. Due to the built in HDR capability that most cell phones have you can shoot in a wider range of lighting conditions than you can with a single frame DSLR (non HDR) camera and still get good contrast and color. In fact one of the things that people struggle with when they transition from a cell phone to a DSLR is the light quality.

Hi first post here. I'm new to macro. This bug was so tiny. He was sitting on a buttercup eating lots of pollen. 1:1 magnification heavily cropped.
