Hi first post here. I'm new to macro. This bug was so tiny. He was sitting on a buttercup eating lots of pollen. 1:1 magnification heavily cropped.

Welcome to POTN, Chris! Cute pic of that bug. It looks very tiny.

Welcome back, pcs. Did you get your 100mm repaired? Amazing detail in that fly.

Well-composed shots! The first looks like quite high magnification.

Hi!

Very cool to see so many people posting great bug shots. I've had my macro lens for only a couple of weeks but I think I'm getting better.

On a side note, how important are megapixels for macro? My D90 got 12mp ans I wonder if this is the biggest factor holding me back getting more detail.

I shoot most of my macro with a 10 yr old T2i for many reasons. If you are in a controlled "enough" of an environment you can keep the ISO low, say 400 or lower. You should be fine, I think. Shooting wide & then cropping might be a different story.

Thanks Arch. Yes, the first image was shot at mfd 1:1 (I think that actually comes out slightly higher mag than 1:1 on a DX). Then I cropped to about 70%

Cool midge!

I love megapixels and more never hurts, but most of us have way more than we need. The pic you just posted was 1600x709 px, and that is only 1.1 megapixels. You threw away 90% of the Nikon's pixels.

With more pixels you can crop more, but when you do so, you start to see the limitations of focus accuracy, motion blur, aberrations, and noise.

I like my 32mp Canon 90D. :-) But realistically, I think I could get good results with my ancient Canon XT (8 mp).

Here is a Tiger Beetle taken on the XT (13 years ago).
