I am trying my hands on TSE for the first time. Canon 90mm f2.8 older version on Sony A7rIV with MC-11 adapter. I am trying tilt to get align my focal plane where more of the things are in DoF. I am finding it very hard. I thought I can control the plane and see clearly the plane of focus but doesn't seem to be the case. I will post example shots. I was using f11, f8 apertures.

Edited:- I am reading more, looks like tilt control is less for closer subjects. I was trying to make sure focus plane is to have all bottle in focus. I don't think I succeeded.

OK, I will add my results with some success.

At f2.8 focussed on near edge.

Now changed the plane of focus so that the whole front face is in focus, still at f2.8

Plane of focus now changed to be the other way around on the short side, still at f2.8

Can't do that in PP as far as I know.

Google "luminous landscape focussing tilt and shift",its well worth the read and explains the subject very well.
The one thing I found was with tilt was you needed live view and endless patience but the results are great if you get it right.
Once you are able to envisage the plane of sharp focus as being wedge shaped things become a bit clearer.

Thanks Chris. Yes I read that. Here is another article that I found worth it.

Nice, great way to visualise the benefits of a TSE lens! It doesn't seem like it's something that's quite usable on the go though, would you agree these lenses are more suited in a studio/tripod setting?

Definitely yes, to the tripod. (Not necessarily studio.)

At the risk of over-simplifying the steps to using tilt, know which way your focus ring works: to the left goes toward infinity and to the right is for close. Keep watching the near and far points that you want to have in focus as you focus back-and-forth between those points. Keep tilting the lens until the focus direction swaps (and it works backwards). That's when you've gone too far. Bring it back and viola. You're done.

Of course, you have to be trying to capture a scene that's within the range of physics of the lens.

Once you have the technique down, and you have a sense for what angle you're going to end up with for various situations, it's possible to get pretty close (and even "close enough") handheld.

One issue I have right now is that my lens is older version where I can't have tilt and shift in the same direction. For food shots when shooting vertically I tilt up/down (more down) but then I want to use the shift to reduce converging lines a bit. My lens doesn't allow it unless I send it to canon to have it adjusted. The newer ones let you do that.

Very true. I've used the first generation and I own the second generation. Not being able to rotate the tilt axis relative to the shift direction would be limiting.

I love my tilt shift, I have always found that shooting diagonally is the key. Straight on I would always have to focal stack.
