This hummer showed up while I was taking photos of birds in the yard and was about 22 ft away. I am amazed at how this lens was able to get the details of such a tiny fast bird at that distance.

Great expression, and this one the lighting shows how multicolored they are. Nice!

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Some great shots posted folks - I especially like the caps of the hummers! I do wish we had some more variety of these little guys and gals here in Michigan...

This was probably my favorite shot from the spring bird migration this year - a Black-throated Blue that posed for just long enough while doing his understory foraging thing:

Wanted to share something a little different from the birds I normally focus on with this big glass.

Quick background first on two points. First, I carry my TCs "stacked" on either side of a 12mm extension tube (fixes the depth problem so they can actually mount). Second, turns out the extenders give the 500 decent max magnification (0.31x with the 2x), and of course that 12mm tube helps a little bit here too. I've keep this in the back of my head for off-chance encounters when I don't have the true macro gear with.

When watching the feathered friends in the trees and over the pond, I noticed this guy that was in no hurry to move. Gave me enough time to stack on the 2x plus the tube. The working distance was still awkward, and handholding 1000mm on crop is a challenge up that close - especially to obtain critical focus on the eyes - but I'm rather pleased, even with focus and composition issues still present.

And, while on the topic, here's another frog (which we found while mainly looking for warblers in the treetops), but taken with the 1.4x. You can see my wife and I reflected in the eye - the details this thing can capture are incredible!

One more in the "not a bird" category that I came across today on my lunch and just had to share. This male carpenter bee hung around long enough for me to practice some up-close BIF (bee in flight :p) shots with the more nimble 400L f/5.6 and a 36mm tube, before I swapped over to the decidedly more deliberate 500L on the same 7DII + tube setup.

Final shot here was at probably 7-10ft. 1/8000 on the shutter isn't enough to totally freeze his wings in flight! I do still enjoy the slight blur at the tips, with the wonderful blue-ish reflections, though.

The smoke from the forest fires in California have produced some dramatic sunsets. Here's one from a couple days ago.
