What a wonderful portrait! . That pose really showcases his preposterously long tail.

It is a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, isn't it?

I've always wanted to photograph that species. . Saw my first ever when I visited Oklahoma last summer to photograph lizards. . So many STFC there, as well as Painted Buntings. . Hope to get back down there for those two bird species again sometime soon - in May, preferably. . At least I'm told that's when the most Painted Buntings are there. . The STFC seem to be there longer.

Are they year-round residents in your area of Texas, or do they just live there seasonally?

.

Thanks for your kind words. Yes, it is a scissor-tailed flycatcher. Unfortunately, they aren't in my area year-round but are here for quite some time. Painted buntings are around the state of Texas right now as well but is dependant on the area. STFC is the state bird of Oklahoma likely due to the number of them in the state. ebird is a good way to check on birds and where they are at any given month.

After a day filled with redwing goodness I switched gears and went looking for the warbler. Looks like my job will be starting up soon so lots less time for birds.

This is absolutely gorgeous!

I can hardly believe how beautifully you rendered the lush, green, layered deciduous foliage in the background. Looks like something an artist would paint if he/she could choose any background at all!

And the way the foliage gets dark across the top of the frame and in the upper left corner is just spectacular - you've given us a great example to follow when it comes to proper compositional techniques for bird portraits.

I wish there was a way to nominate this for the POTN "Best Of" awards.

Very well said Tom. I really like the second photograph, where the lighting is just great only the bird being sort of illuminated. Very very nice Charles.

I feared for his safety as his parents were no where to be seen and he couldn't fly and he was chirping bringing attention to himself.
