You must be pretty close for the image to be at only 140mm.

We have a small crabapple tree in the yard and I see the owls in it sometimes. But it was getting late and I had to use a 70-200 rather than the 100-400. Luckily he had moved down to a lower branch and I was able to get about 15 ft. away from him. I think since they live here in town, the presence of people doesn't bother them as much.

There were three young ones around last night as well

Thank you. It has been fun to have the family of owls around this spring. Especially with all the "stay at home" time.

Caught this little guy on the lamp post in the front of the house after a downpour last night. He sat there for about ten minutes.

Thanks Mike. Do you agree with my observation or am I being OCD. I think my 7DII needs a bit of micro adjustment on tele lenses.

You're lucky if you get a lens that doesn't need a little MA - I test my lenses with the changes of the seasons (temp changes)

One from this afternoon in the garden. Using 2x tele and stacking rings.

I'd really have to look at several other images to have an opinion. In the photo you posted, you were using a 2X TC. Honestly, I've never been really thrilled with the 2X TC. I much prefer to use the 1.4 TC.

Here is a quick and easy test to determine if a serious micro adjustment test is required. I set these 5 AA batteries about 2 inches apart, shot them with my 1DX II (100-400 mm Canon zoom lens) at about a 45 degree angle, with the aperture wide open. I focused on the center (X) battery. From this photo, it appears as though I took the photo straight on, but I did not. Like I mentioned, it was shot at approximately a 45 degree angle. Notice that the X battery does appear to be the sharpest sharpest of the five. Those batteries to the left and the right (front and back) of the center are equally out of focus. This quick test immediately tells me that that I am not having front or back focusing issues, and it's not necessary to do an elaborate micro adjusting test.

thanks Mike. I try this method with shorter lenses. Will give it a try on the Tele. The lenses are spot on on the 1Dx II. It is the 7D II that always gives me a less than satisfied feeling with the end product (when TCs are in the equation).

My 100-400mmII with the 1.4 needs about +13 MFA when used with the 7D2. With that adjustment it auto-focuses great.

The bare lens needs hardly any adjustment.
