No, I purchased the 1.4x and 2.0x Version III models several years ago. I have never owned the version II tele-converters.
I am sorry. I didn't make myself clear. I was talking about the version ll of the lens.

I own Version II of the 600mm lens, purchased new in October 2015. I use it mostly for bird photos (with the 1.4x teleconverter), and moon rise photos with the 2.0x teleconverter. The only real advantage of the Version III 600 mm lens is lighter weight, as the image quality is almost the same (according to The Digital Picture).

Your having used both and prefer the second version over the third is what I was thinking after all the reading I have done. I use a tripod most of the time so the extra weight wouldn't matter much. My camera body is a 5d4. Out of curiosity, what version of a 1.4 tele works best with this lens? Having used both lenses, I didn't notice any discernible difference in sharpness or IQ performance. It's all about the weight savings, and since you're using a tripod and the weight isn't a concern to you, 100% go with a 600 II. Fantastic combo when paired w/ the 5D4. Also, recommend the 1.4 III TC, as it (along w/ the 2.0 III) was released in tandem as the Mark II super teles back in 2011.

I think the second version is the way to go for me also. What did you think about the images taken with a 1.4 lll attached?

Since I was shooting small birds on full frame body, I always used the 1.4 to get me to my ideal focal length. There’s a tiny bit of IQ loss if you compare it to just the bare lens, but it’s negligible. I was always more than pleased with the shots I came home with.
