Fantastic hovering hovers! I don't know how you guys do it.

Lots of luck. I find I just get into the zone and try and find a hoverfly in focus. They are less likely to be spooked if I already have my camera and flash heads in their close proximity. And then the flying photos are really just a matter of luck - firing off a few shots as they fly past and pray you get it in focus - which rarely happens in my experience

Amazing, excellent, beautiful, etc, etc, etc... :)

Practice does equal better. And better.

Thank you very much. There are some different flowers about to come out in the garden so hopefully they will attract the hoverflies and bees as much as this Hebe Autumn Glory plant so I can have some variety in my photos.

I am still very much hovering around the 1 x magnification mark - perhaps slipping to 1.5 occasionally. The true test of mastering this lens will be taking photos at a higher magnification though I am very happy with the photos I am getting at this magnification at the moment so no rush to make things ever more tricky.

The small Paper Wasp colony in our back garden, snoozing amongst the red berries of the Sacred Bamboo Shrub.

Focus bracketed using the Helicon FB Tube (external link).

Nicely spotted!

It's technically very good as well as being graphically effective, and at the same time a bit funny. :-)

Yes - once you dial in the optimum settings and provided the insects doesn't move, or a gust of wind doesn't blow the insect out of the frame, or other insects don't crawl around in the BG, the results are quite astonishing.:-)

Out of interest, do you use the FB Tube handheld or on a tripod?

That berry looks amazing! As does the bee

BTW does Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM @252mm mean you have added extension tubes?

Oh yes, tripod mounted definitely.:-)

I had the Canon (EOS R) + (RF-EF Adapter) + (Helicon FB Tube) + (Ext Tube 25mm) + (EF Extender x1.4 Mk III) + (180mm F3.5 L) so quite a long imaging train. I find the AF on the 180mm slow, but once you have it dialled in on the subject, it is accurate and responsive. If a gust of wind blows the subject out of the frame, the AF winds all the way out to infinity and I have to manually wind it back to prevent it hunting.

This was a stack of some 30 frames so IMO, a tripod is essential for this setup.

The EOS R articulating screen is a joy to use; I just "Touch" the closest point of focus (on the berry in this case) and then press and hold the shutter and off it goes.

The 180mm + Extender x1.4 gives the 252mm focal length and the 25mm Tube+ Helicon FB Tube allows me to get a little closer.

Cheers

Dennis

Wow that is quite a train indeed! I had read the 180mm is the sharpest Canon lens ever in one of the reviews. Shame the AF is slow. I still love the idea of a macro lens that I can be a bit further away from the less friendly insects or the more timid ones.

I had an articulating screen on my 70D which I really liked. The EOS R looks like a great body. I had a look at a friends M50 the other day and was surprised the lenses he had didn't have a AF/MF switch on the lenses. Do the EOS R lenses have this AF/MF toggle in camera now instead of on the lens?

I have never thought of adding an extender into the mix for macro shots. I have a 1.4 extender but have always found when using it with my 100-400mm lens the image quality degraded.

My 35mm and 24-105mm RF lenses both have a A/M switch on the lens body for Auto AF or Manual AF.

I have found the Canon x1.4 Extender Mk III to be very useful, with excellent IQ and responsive AF provided I maintain sound shooting techniques to avoid camera shake.

Cheers

Dennis
