The R5 is what I am leaning toward. I just posted my post processed version of an ISO 4000 R5 raw from Jaren Polin over in the R5 discuss and photos thread.

I shoot a 1dx2 with a 100-400-2 as well for bif primarily. I’m often out in negative temperatures, as cold as -10C. ( 15-20 F) I’ve never had an issue with this equipment or with my 7D2 when I had it. My question is: will these new mirrorless Canon cameras work as well in these conditions?

Don't know about MLIC. I shot with my 7D at -30C with no issues.

Yes, the R6 is sealed to the 6D2 level and the R5 to the 5D4. You just have a shutter and a sensor, where the 7D2 has a mirror in addition to all of this, so if the 7D2 survived, so will the R cameras. There is nothing special about MILC over the 7D and 1DX2, it just lacks a pentaprism/optical viewfinder and a mirror and a separate AF system/board. If anything with such a simpler design, it should work even better.

You need it for sports so that is encouraging.

I used the R for sports too, until I got too frustrated with its AF and slow readout during bursts. :)

Sold it about 3 months after getting it and made a tidy profit, so I ended up happy after all. :D

I know you had it and sold it. That was why I said it was encouraging that you will get another MLIC.

I still have an MILC, and like it alot. I use it quite a bit to shoot at apertures smaller than f/8, so it is indispensable for that, along with focus peaking for macros and manual lenses.

Yes M50, good little camera, great for travel, does things the DSLR apsc cannot.

I don't know if this helps you, but I shot the R in as low as -10f without issues. That is with chill factor on the beach for as long as I can keep my hands from going numb.

Cheers,
JOE

Do you need the wider angle of view for the astrophotography? If not, the 90D should be a better choice than the 6D2; less noise at 1/4000, but even less for long exposures, and more resolution than a 1.6x crop from the 6D2.

If you're shooting a large area of the sky the 6D2 would be better for that aspect, but if you're targeting individual bodies or small areas of the sky, there's nothing better than the 90D (or M6-II), with a given lens.

The APS-C sensor has it's place in AP, however I have a cooled APS-C Astro Camera from ZWO (ASI071MC-COOL) and for long exposures I can keep the camera sensor 40 degrees C below ambient tempurature, I usually run it a 32 degrees F (0 C)

Full Frame is good for specific targets such as the Andromeda Galaxy or the Orion Nebula. Yes you can get them with a wide angle lens but focusing is an issue a telescope focuses easier and better (especially with a Batenov mask).

I use 6 different scopes ranging from 400mm to 4,000mm (16" scope) and decide on camera based on target and scope.

Coming from two 5D Mark III’s, I would buy the R5. Bigger size appeals to me as similar as current bodies. Plus my College Football number was 5.....

Now I REALLY have scope envy. Always wanted a 16" LX. I have an old LX200 8" with the old controller box and a newer LX200 R (I guess that's older now too.) 8" and numerous ETXs including the anniversary 1250. I finally moved to the family farm 20 years ago with some fairly dark skies and I hardly even take time to pull them all out anymore. I've threatened to put up a dome since I moved here and just never have. Maybe you have inspired me. :)
