Fantastic photo of Neowise. I am new to this astrophotography field - would you mind explaining what do you refer to as light images and dark images and how they differ in settings, technique etc. Also what method did you use to combine the 30 images?

Thanks in advance

Nice image. I tried last night from Texas but too cloudy. Maybe tonight.

The light images are the ones taken of the comet. Dark images were taken at the same setting as the light ones, but with the lens cap on.

I used Deep Sky Stacker which is a free program.

Other than a picture here and there of the moon I'm also new to astrophotography. A sky tracker is a must to stack images.

This video helped me with the program.

My attempt from the Angeles National Forest, a few miles out of town. Skies were so so, as was my attempt. I would have loved to have spent another hour setting up more carefully, but I was rushed for time and only got to shoot light frames. 5 shots in total, 2 seconds each, for a total of 10 seconds of exposure.

5D4, 70-200 II at 200mm, 1600 ISO on a tripod. In hindsight, I should have used shutter delay, as I lost some frames due to camera shake.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Thank you for your reply. Surely if you have the lens cap on the image would be just black?

I will check out that video link now. Many thanks!

My attempt. Used this shot because of the shooting star in the corner. Sky was fairly clear, but have seen clearer.

I watched the video and it makes sense now.

By taking the photo with the lens cap on with the same settings as the photo with the lens cap off, it captures the noise that would be generated for these settings.

The clever software can then subtract this noise from the lens cap off photo to create a cleaner image. I would never have guessed this.

re-processed the star trail, and this crop is better.
Tonight I'll try with my 50mm f1.4 prime lens, then the 70-200 L with a 2x TC for 400mm

I heard Neowize will be at closest distance to the Earth on 7/23/2020. Looking through the thread with so many great images I decided to take a picture of the comet too. So, I grabbed Sigma 150-600mm lens with ASI294MC camera on it and installed the lens on equatorial mount. I had ~30 min before the comet dove behind tree line on my backyard. I got 13X30sec sub-frames with SharpCap Pro. So... I got a picture too. :-D

Using Canon EOS R. Not the greatest photo. How do you make the stars sharper?
