You'd have to use an external battery pack to keep up with the shutter speed.

Either an external battery pack or the ability to control the dwell time between shots to slow it down to a rate that the fash can keep-up with :-).

I used the 90D's internal automatic focus bracketing mode to take 15 shots and then stacked them in DPP's Depth Composite Mode. I really wish a flash was supported in focus bracketing mode . Manually added EXIF Data.

Hi Dave

Just FYI, I use the Canon Macro Twin Lite MT-26EX-RT with a Canon External Battery Pack CPE4 (x8 AA's inside) and a Helicon FB Tube and at min focus distance with the flash heads maybe 3 to 5 cms (1-2") from the subject, I rattled off 50 exposures and the MT-26EX-RT kept up with no issues.

The rear of the EOS R LCD shows a Flash Ready Symbol and this never blinked. I was shooting at F8, ISO800 and 1/200 sec.

When I accidentally set the camera to F11 and ISO 100, the Speedlite began dropping maybe every 2nd or 3rd frame?

Cheers

Dennis

Howdy Dennis,

Using the Helicon FB Tube certainly makes automated focus stacking with a flash a reality :-). If I did more stacking, I'd definitely be looking into that solution. I've used my Yongnuo YN24EX Twin Flash in burst mode and I recall getting at least a dozen shots in the burst but I don't recall what my settings were. I mostly use the Yongnuo in manual mode with the power set to somewhere between 1/64th and 1/16th with 1/32nd being the most common. By the way, The Yongnuo YN24EX is a little buggy (maybe buggy is better for shooting bugs :)) in that if you move the 90D's AF Point, the flash refuses to fire until you either power-cycle the camera or flash . Others have reported some YN24EX bugginess with other bodies too. So far, I'm willing to put-up with this issue because of the low entry price .

Got in a little tug of war with this one. It kept pushing the straw out and I was pushing in.

That’s very good!

I’m impressed with the camera and DPP stacking (and your photography):)

Thanks :-). I was pleasantly surprised at how well DPP stacked the shots. I need to do more with it to see where things might not work so well but from my very limited experience with three other stacking products, I'm happiest with DPP. I still wish Canon would add flash control to the camera's focus bracketing capability. I just shake my head when I think of how that might positively shape the macro market for Canon sales.

I just looked back at the 15 shots to see how much movement was going on. The Jumper was moving that blurry leg by the entire width of it, and the chelicera and pedipalps were in constant movement throughout the stack. DPP did a nice job of selecting what to keep and what to toss. I didn't do anything other than run DPP in regards to what it used from the stack.

I initially thought these were victims when I took this out in the field. After further consideration it seems that they are left over molts maybe?
