Hello all,

I am considering upgrading from my Canon 7D to a full frame (not sure which body yet - could use suggestions on that as well!) and would also need to upgrade two of my lenses. I am wondering if anyone has experience using the following EF-S lenses and then upgrading to the EF lenses listed:

This is my main lens. Used both indoors and outdoors.
Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS
upgrading to
Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS

This is mostly used outdoors for beach and travel photos, and occasionally used indoors for real estate photos.
Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5
upgrading to
Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS
(should I also be considering the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L?)

If you do have experience with either or both sets of these lenses, how do they compare? Is it worth upgrading to the full frame body and EF lenses? Will the f/4 IS work well in indoor low-light situations?

I have also considered the f/2.8 options but since I am not a professional, I think/hope the f/4 IS version of each lens would be fine for my needs.

I also have the Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L and Canon EF 135mm f/2L, which I plan on keeping.

Finally, if I do upgrade my equipment, where is the best place to sell my 7D and two EF-S lenses? They are all in excellent condition and very well taken care of. They all still look new.

Any thoughts would greatly help!

Thanks!
Joanna

Those look like pretty comparable replacements for your existing lenses. I'd you want to keep 2.8 you can get the 16-35 2.8 instead. Another option to consider would be the 24-70 2.8 or the 24-105 f4. But either route you have your focal ranges covered.

As for selling, I prefer my local Craigslist because it eliminates shipping and the uncertainty of a deal breaking down after the fact. But the buy/sell forums here are quite active.

The 16-35 F4 is truly a gem of a lens. Get it without hesitation. I don't know if the real estate interior photography you mention will warrant the extra cost and bulk of a F2.8, but the F4 is relatively inexpensive and very readily available on the used market.

I don't know too much about the 24-70 F4. If it is anything like the F2.8 II that preceded it, it must be very good as well.

Thank you, that helps! I use my wide angle lens less than any of the others, but I love having the option.

I've owned the EF 24-70 f/4. It was okay, but wouldn't recommend it. I much preferred my 24-105 L. Another lens to consider is the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. I shot one for a couple of days and it impressed me as a very decent lens at a reasonable price.

Unless you have budget issues get the 16-35 f/4. It's much better than the 17-40.

I've sold gear here on POTN and over on Fred Miranda with good results.

I've done Craigslist in the past, but local in person transactions in these days of the virus make that a non-starter for me.

I can't speak from experience about the 24-70, but I do not believe the f/4 IS managed to live up to the expectations set by its f/2.8 predecessor. You may want o research some more of the similar offerings recently out of Tamron and Sigma.

Regarding the 16-35 f/4 IS; this is a lens that you should have in your bag if you own an EF mount body, IMO. A year or so ago, I added a "landscape" setup to my kit that pairs this lens and the 5D4...and it has performed flawlessly for me. I've mounted it to both the 5D4 and 7D2 on occasion and it's never let me down yet.

Thanks, everyone, for your help! I just purchased the 5D Mark IV in a kit with the Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS and I also bought the Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS. I found everything on sale for a great price plus an additional 15% off discount and it was tax-free - everything was about $1k less than if I had bought it elsewhere! I've been wanting to upgrade for a few years and am excited to try all my new gear on my most important subjects, my twin boy toddlers :)

Nice kit! Now grab a used 70-200 F4 IS (you don't need the ver 2) and you'll never regret it.

Having both the 70-200 f/4 L IS Version 1 and the 70-200 f/4 L IS Mark II, I would recommend buying new the 70-200 f/4 L IS Mark II. Although the Version 1 is still a great lens, Still in my possession, the new Mark II has the same feel as color, contrast and slight improvement in sharpness. The Mark II along with your 16-35 f/4 L IS and 24-70 f/4 L IS Fits better. And have have all of the lenses above.
My Greek Trilogy of the Canon f/4 L IS is my European travel kit as IS allows me to Bracket Interior Cathedrals Hand Held with beautiful results.
Enjoy your new gear!

I kept my 7D2 and sold the EF-S 10-18mm and Sigma 18-35mm f/1,8 to fund a used Tamron 24-70mm f/2,8 G2 purchase.

Meanwhile, I am considering the Tamron 15-30mm G2 or build a Tamron travel kit pair (Tamron 17-35mm and 35-150mm f/2,8-4 duet)

In your position, I would get a f/4 as you have a 35mm f/1,4L and 135mm f/2L (keep it !) for low light or indoors.

 :p

The 10-18 would have found new life in the R5/R6. There are some EFS lenses that are very useful in the new RF mount FF bodies.

I believe the new mount design would unlock more restrictions due to optics / physics on the ultra wide angle lens section.

I see it would bring new optical designs based on retrofocus approach with reduced back focus distance and large mount diameter to the table.
Soon would see like changes to the EF8-15mm fisheye, TS-17mm, EF 11-24mm, while the 15-35mm f/2,8 and 28-70mm f/2 has shown what the new mount would bring with the 35mm f/1,8 IS STM.

The Nikon Z mount would also bring in new innovations as personally, I find Nikon (Nikkor) and Tamron is better in ultra wide angle optics (14-24mm f/2,8 and 15-30mm f/2,8 G2) design than Canon. :p

Meanwhile I would retain the Canon telephotos.
