The 90D works fine in Live View if you use a red-dot to aim it. Much better and faster than looking through the viewfinder.

But how do you adjust the aiming when in the field?

Still don’t know how u get these fantastic shots..I have tried all settings..best I get is 20 percent take home ..sensitivity-1 acc,dec..1. Autofocus point 1.
Any suggestions..I also have a canon 500mm f4;-)a:cry:

i'll typically use more than one autofocus point...either the grid in the middle, or all points where you start off in the middle, and then it switches to all of them...not going to lie...it doesn't nail every shot...but it does get quite a few...when it does miss though, i wonder, is it the 19 year old lens, or is it the camera?

These are very, very fine. Would you mind sharing your auto-focus settings? How many active focus points, etc. Anything that might be of assistance. I am about ready to give up on BIF with my 90d. Thnx.

honestly i swap in and out between different settings all the time...sometimes i use the middle grid, other times all points, and start with the middle...sometimes i just go single if there is a busy background

The M6 mark II seems to be a mirrorless version of the 90D and doesn't suffer any focus issue as far as I know. The probably the best solution to this. The only reason I'm not considering the m6ii is the lack of a headphone port.

i'm kinda amazed how well the 90D does in live view...i feel like it can focus in such dark conditions...which is usually when i'm using live view for owl shots on a tripod...i do wonder if they came out with a replacement to the m50 how well that would work out. I"m always on the lookout for an m50. It would be such an upgrade to my cheap eos-m.

i've been having fun lately trying to increase those megapixels...this is a 20 image stitch that ended up being 160mp :)

obviously you can't really tell here with the size limitations...but the pygmy owl is basically one photo

You initially set the camera and scope up on a tripod focused at something far away. Then to take a picture in Live View, hold the camera a few inches away from your face and center the red dot in the scope over the target. You use a 1/1 scope (no magnification) and keep both eyes open with one eye looking through the scope. You can see the whole sky this way, not just the limited view through the viewfinder, and when the red dot is over the target, press the shutter button.

K, thanks. I have a dot sight but rarely use a tripod. The sight is easy to take along but not the tripod. So when I arrive at a place with flying birds, I am not properly equipped to set up the sight. So my results have been lacking. It is a matter of judging ahead of time whether I should expect BIFs at a place and if so, setting up the dot sight in the parking lot so I don't have to lug the tripod.

I've tried to calibrate the sight without a tripod and it did not work very well.

You only need to calibrate / set it once. When you clamp it to the flash bracket, move it all the way to the left or right while tightening. When you remove and remount it later, do the same thing and it should still be in adjustment.

Here is a video that explains how to use a sight:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyRAxI0K7xU (external link)
It's rather long winded. The guy's tripod isn't very stable. Also he shuts one eye which you probably shouldn't. Keep both eyes open and sight through your dominate eye. Your view of the sky or whatever will be much better. I mentioned about remounting the sight. Adjust it on a tripod. Then take it off and remount it again with it twisted to the left or right as you did the first time . It should be exactly in the same spot as compared to the camera's point of focus. This is the one I use on my 90D. The other smaller site quit working at it was a pain to adjust. This one is easy. Always use only a 1 to 1 scope, not a magnified one.

OK, makes sense. Thanks. I will have to give it a go again. It could bring new life to my 90D (and the sight).

My 90D gets about the same AIservo success as my 60D . I do think maybe the buffer on the 90 fills faster than the 60 but so far I don't seem to have a whole lot of bad focus with the 90 . I miss some like with the 60D but then again my BIF are taken from the deck of a pontoon boat which is never completely still.

I just watched this video. Very interesting. How do you attach the dot sight to be able to be lined up and clamped on the hot shoe? Are there any brackets made to do this since the generic sights are made for guns?
