King Charles II married there in 1662. Medieval hospital, Tudor ammunition store and church for the forces since the 1580s, the Royal Garrison Church has stood in Portsmouth for over 800 years. We were there for almost 2 weeks, and met a really wonderful couple the first night in. The gentleman I was out with and I spent most of the remaining time with them, and they showed us all around Portsmouth and the couhtry side, really a great history lesson. This was one of the best and most memorable port visits I had, in my 20 years in the Navy. This church was one of the places they showed us. Thanks for sharing, it brought back some wonderful memories. If you change "some fool" to 'the President', you might avoid spoiling this thread with partisan politics. I wasn't aware that the President was micromanaging the location of the wall. But if he is, then shame on him. I suspect it's someone else. But anyone who wants to mess up that beautiful part of American history richly deserves the title of "fool."

If you ever get the chance to revisit it is a fascinating place now. The Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is a great place to visit with King Henry VIIIs flagship the Mary Rose, Admiral Nelson’s ship HMS Victory and HMS Warrior Britain’s first steel hulled warship. All in a dockyard that is still the home of the modern Royal Navy! Mark
