Another outstanding shot; how DO you manage such close, head-on shots of these things? I can barely get 'em in the *viewfinder" at a distance, much less catch them close enough for this sort of detail :o

If you're liberal with your definition of local, yes :D I got a bunch like this around July 4th a few years back down on the Columbia River, on the WA side from Astoria, OR. They tend to show up down that way at that time of year and hunt/scavenge the tide lines; which brings them low and close so that you can shoot less "from below" and get better angles. This one was part of the same group:

Summer's also a good time to find Brown Pelicans along there, as well. Occasional whale watching can be done on a few migrating packs that'll come up the river mouth to feed for a bit, as well.

Being up North there, though, you can also get regularly good opportunities with these guys just across the border, in Delta, BC. A ton of my Eagle shots are from up there.
