Finding old grave sites with multiple children's graves side-by-side is common...sickness and disease that is easily curable or preventable these days were killers in the past.

Years ago a friend and I were road-tripping south Alabama when we saw a cemetery on a rise at the back of a large broomstraw patch. It was probably 400-500 feet from the road to the cemetery. The only route was through the broomstraw patch. We started walking towards it when we suddenly started noticing oblong/rectangular shaped holes in the ground every so often that were about the size of a...grave. An uneasiness started growing in us. Also, the odd piece of marble or granite. Kinda creepy. We started watching our steps much closer. Upon reaching the cemetery at the backside of the patch we found it to have an old iron fence around it with tombstones six feet tall. Some of the slabs were slid to the side exposing dark cracks into the graves. Creepy #2. For some reason we did not venture inside the fence...just something seemed...creepy. Really creepy. The graves were old, going back into the late 1800's on up into the early to mid 1900's. There were some graves to the right side of the fenced in area. These were more recent graves but still aged a bit. I saw a row of about six or seven small graves. None of the children buried there were over two years old. What stunned me, though, was that the dates on the graves were scattered throughout the 1970's (we witnessed this back in the mid to late 1980's). Sad and strange...and creepy.

Amazing story; an experience which stays with you, no doubt!

That probably would have spooked me too, even though I typically enjoy such creepy explorations.


I was on Martha's Vineyard decades ago, and we visited a cemetery while there.
The slate headstones were severely weathered, but we were able to make out dates
set within the 1600s, with some birth/death dates being frighteningly close.
It was a very somber exploration.

An old, windswept Wesleyan Methodist cemetery in Lower Island Cove, Newfoundland. It appears that a heritage project in recent years secured the stones to new bases and re-traced the inscriptions. Typical of many Methodist markers of the period - no crosses, much text.
