Sorry I'm running late, but back to work and all that. Excellent Kodachromes Martin. They remind me of my childhood and my Dad's Kodachromes!

Before and After - The Weekly Editing Challenge
...now compiled into a single, easy to locate thread, that can be added to your subscribe/follow list!

Rules are simple:

  • Download the image file from the current week

  • Contestants will have 7 days to edit the image and post their edited version to the thread (as many entries as you like)

  • The owner of the original image will choose a winner

  • The winner will copy & paste this post and include a new downloadable image link

  • The new image must be unedited / SOOC (straight our of camera), full-resolution, and in a RAW format, ie. CR2, DNG, TIF, etc

  • (Dropbox works well for uploading and linking these large files)

The purpose of this game is to be creative and learn new editing techniques. You must give some insight into exactly how you went about editing the image. For example, increased shadows sliders, reduced highlights, local sharpening, white balance adjustment, specific filters used, tone curve adjustments, etc. Comments and/or questions regarding the edits are encouraged.

Here's one from my archive. I was following this chipmunk around and he suddenly jumped from sunlight into deep shade. I was using auto-ISO but my other settings caused underexposure even at ISO 6400. So let's see how good at lifting shadows and tackling noise you are. Come on and show off!:-P

HERE is the link to the RAW file.

SOOC:

I was working on it as you wrote! Adjusted exposure, white and black points, lifted shadows and dropped highlights. Denoise with Topaz Denoise AI, crop, dodge and burn and sharpen.

Time's up! All great edits and very hard to choose winner, but I think Mozes's edit is a tiny bit better than the others with Nigel coming in second. So, what's it going to be Mozes?

It was a tough one, Mark, but it's good to struggle sometimes. I certainly did!

Yes, I struggled with it too, several years ago. I've changed computers twice since then and couldn't find my edit, so couldn't post it. Maybe I'll do it again since I have better equipment now anyway. IMHO this contest should involve some struggling, it's all about learning from each other and improving our editing skills.:-)

Martin I redid my edit and am pleased with it. Denoised, added lens corrections, raised shadows, adjusted contrast and vibrancy, and added a vignette all in DXO Photolab 3.

All done in Photoshop; and, no, I did not use Dehaze in ACR. All achieved with selected use of Levels and Brightness. The uninteresting sky was replaced using a nik Effects Graduated Filter. Finally altered aspect ratio, resized and sharpened with Topaz Sharpen AI

May be it needs a few more balloons, I'll think about that :-)
