I have never found a use for this, am I missing something?

My first real camera was a Canon F1. That was a long time ago.

off camera. Putting the flash on the ground for background light, or on a bookshelf, etc.

Yes, but the ETTL does not work by itself that way. I use a pair of the Godox triggers, and a mini-tripod thingy. Not important, it just crossed my mind as I was going through a box of of never used accessories in my closet.

Personally, I don't use ETTL for off camera flash so it never occurred to me. I also use the stand to secure the flash to a lightstand via the threads on the bottom, using a threaded pin and grip head.

E-TTL certainly works Off Camera Flash in the Canon 600 EX-RT, ST-E3 RT system whether the OCF 600 EX-RT is on a light stand, small plastic foot or hand held.
