Nice shot here Ray!

Thanks Mike. Praise from you is praise indeed!:-)

Mike, are you still using the R5 and how well is it performing with the EF 100-400 II?
Would you recommend it as better than the 7D II? Any comments welcome.

Thanks.

Ray...that is very nice of you to say. But I'm definitely not a heavy hitter on these forums.

The smoke is so bad around here from all the fires, that I'm not able to really get out and do any serious photography. I'll go to a park near me or shoot in my own yard. I'm also using the Canon M6 II because it is a crop sensor camera, and I love the 7DII so much. I actually like this little camera, and I hang my 100-400 on it. As far as the R5...I'm shooting neighborhood birds and really like the camera a lot. But I'm so disappointed about our smoke conditions and having to stay in the house most of the day. It's like a foggy day all the time.

The R5 really runs nice with the 100-400. It is a perfect combination as far as I'm concerned. I like to slap the 1.4 TC on this combination, because so far with the little testing I've been doing, it's working out just fine.

You asked about how I like the R5 compared to the 7DII. It's a tough question to answer, because one is a full frame camera, and the other is a crop sensor camera. I really like that extra reach of the 7DII, and the image quality of it is so very good. I truly wanted to go mirrorless, so by going with the R5, I can use all my current Canon lenses with zero negative drawbacks. To me, everything is great with the R5, except for the fact that I'm a little hindered by not getting the magnification that I do with the 7DII. If you on fence about this decision, I'd say go with the R5, but keep your 7DII. I'm glad with the choice I made.

Blackburnian warbler from spring migration

Awesome, just look at the color on this guy, expertly brought out w/ Dave's skill.

From time to time I'll say a bird is on my list, but the Blackburnian is literally the bird I currently most want to photograph in my life. I haven't even seen one yet, though eBird has reports of them in my area. Someday...

male Superb Fairy Wren

Richard, are my eyes playing tricks on me, or is the black around the male SFW actually a deep purple in color? If so, I retract my statement above about the Blackburnian being top of my life list.

Mike, first off, sorry to hear how the conditions out there are impacting yours/everyone's life. My best friend out in the Richland/Pasco area sent me a video of his backyard, and it is a pea-soup fog bank. Can't imagine what that's like, after months of quarantine/lock down finally being lifted, not being able to fully get out and enjoy freedom again ***

Thank you for sharing your experiences, and especially for adding in the additional impressions when comparing the R5 to using your APS-C bodies. It's valuable for a shooter like me who currently uses a crop sensor camera for birding, and is contemplating what that loss of "reach" would mean. Due to the high resolution of the R5 sensor, of course we are able to crop and still retain detail, but I have a hard time hurdling that idea, and would rather stick to getting it right in camera. Of course, that means either: bigger lenses using TCs, or improving our field craft and making up that loss of reach by getting even closer to the birds ;-)a Well, I've tried both, and both options have their limitations!

Are you thinking about getting the 100-500?

*** It goes without saying that we all know there are people who are being directly impacted or losing their lives due to the fires, and no one is downplaying their plight. Not being able to go out side or get clear photographs pale in comparison to those who are suffering, but that doesn't mean each person can't share their own situational experience.

Thanks Matt, that’s very nice of you ! :-) If you are ever in my area for spring migration, we’ll get you one. Luckily, they are one of the more common warblers that come through my place.

(apologies - wrong name  .) Matthew these Blue Wrens are not easy (for me) to capture the colours easily.
Yes you're right and it is a fascinating and beautiful colouration. Like some others, the way the light plays on the feathers affects the outcome.
Here's a crop of another that shows that purple hue. It's a tad noisy!
I guess they are not called Superb Fairy Wrens for nothing and yet there is a Splendid Fairy Wren that I think deserves the primary accolades and this called Splendid instead- a close second in beauty.
Our wrens come in a various forms and colours and are all worthy of being amongst, IMO, the most beautiful of all birds.
Their nature and antics all make them very special for me.
But that Blackburnian is gorgeous

Excellent shot, Richard. The rock makes a nice perch in this photo.

Many thank Mike for your generous comment.

Might be evening but you've bought out the details in this very nicely.
