I've spent lots of times in the Sierras. This looks like just foothills which usually just have a lot of wild grasses and scrub brush.

Moody Icelandic highlands on a cloudy autumn day along road F35 - the Kjölur Route. The morning light was great and we loved the touches of autumn colours around this desolate landscape.
