True - basically main rule is it should be a noun but not a proper one ... but flexibility is all, particularly when we get to X and other tough letters!

"Red" the colour would do on its own, as would "underneath".

True, but Henk made no mention of 'X' - and that, traditionally, is the only letter for which an exception is made and allowances made.
